No network on mobile broadband

I have taken out a mobile wifi pay monthly contract but when trying to connect it is giving a no network message and a red 'x' in the dashboard on my browser plus I have not been able to register the account online. Is there something I need to do to activate the sim or number?

Hi jond22

Thank you for your post and a very warm welcome to the eForum.:smileyhappy:

There could be two possibilities that this is happening, the first is that the SIM has not activated, so I can check this for you please follow the Private Message I have sent to you, once we have your response either myself or one of the team will be in touch as soon as we can.

You can find your PM inbox here.

Secondly it may be down to the coverage in your area, please can you take a look at our Network Issues thread and post your results back here.

Many Thanks

After wasintg HOURS on this issue I have managed to get mine working using the following ... I unstalled and uninstalled the vodafone softare first ....

Creating a Manual Dial Up Networking Connection on Windows 7:

In order to set up a manual dial up networking connection, first enter the initialisation command in the modem properties. This specifies the Access Point Name (APN) the device is going to connect to:

  1. Go to Control Panel and select System (visible when viewing by Small or Large icons) and then Device Manager from the left hand menu

  2. Expand the Modems heading and go into properties for the Vodafone Mobile Broadband modem

  3. Go to the Advanced tab

  4. Enter the initialisation command as AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet”

  5. Click apply and ok

Once done create a new dial up networking connection as follows:

  1. Start Menu / Control Panel / Network and Sharing Center / Set up a new connection or network

  2. Choose “Connect to the Internet”

  3. Ensure ”No, create a new connection” is selected and click Next

  4. Click on ”Dial-Up”

  5. Select  the Vodafone Modem  (if there are no other modems installed on the system you will not see this option).

  6. Enter the Phone number:  *99***1#

  7. Username & Password = web & web

  8. “Connection Name” = a name of your choosing.

  9. Click “Connect” to complete and test the connection. Note: Please ensure Vodafone Mobile Connect/Vodafone Mobile Broadband is not running before attempting the connection.

Hi,

If you're getting "no network" as in no signal, then what you've mentioned won't make a difference as signal is required to be able to onnect both via the vodafone software and a dial up networking connection.

You can tell if it is actually a low signal issue, or the vodafone software not registering a siganl by looking at the light on the USB modem being used. On the more recent USB modems, if the light is flashing blue or green then it's seeing  2G or 3G signal respectively. If there is a flashing blue / green light on the modem, but the Vodafone software is saying no signal, then it's an issue with the applciation, wnd what you've mentioend MIGHT help. Alternatively selecting a different network within the Vodafone software (advanced view > priorities > hinghlight mobile conenction > click on mobile > wait for the network scan > choose a network that IS NOT vodafone >  click on mobile > wait for the network scan > choose a network that IS vodafone) might help.

If there's no mention of Vodafone in the network list when doing the above, or the light isn't blue or green then you  don't have enough network coverage for the dongle to pick up. Bear in mind that handsets are better at picking up netowkr than USB mdoems. This is due to the size of the ariel in the respective devices as with radio, bigger is better.

I hope that helps.

HC

No, it connects and says connected but also says there is "no network" ... ie. you can't access the internet

Lovely,

OK.

Is the laptop one used for work or for personal use?

Is there any static IP/DNS specific config on this machine? Bear in mind this can be done via the registry, not just via the networking options within Windows.

Do you have any proxy config ont he machine?

What antivirus/firewall are you using?

What make/model is the laptop?

Are there any 3rd part connectionmanagers running in the background?

If you connect via the windows conenction manager (you can use the WiFi/Network icon next to your clock to get at this - click the Vodafone icon, then click connect) does it make any difference?

If you clean boot does it make any difference (instructions here)?

Which version of Moible Broadband are you using?

If you can let me know on the above I may be able to offer further advice, but it's a little tricky to say what's causing your problem based on the information provided so far.

Cheers

HC

I don't need help, it works! I am posting this as per my other reply, to try and help others as there are many posts on this issue but no solutions!
