Payg Charges

Ok, this doesnt really seem like a big problem, but i dont use my mobile device alot, so every penny counts :P

Anyway, i noticed a while back that i seem to get charged even when im not using the connection, such as 2MB being used but 6p coming off my balance... after some maths, i worked out that it should only cost 0.7p per megabyte (of course, im horrible at maths lol), so im just wondering if it works on a time-limit charge as well as data-usage?

Just did a quick test, left the internet on for 34 mins, started at £10,66 balance, used 274KB and now im down to 10.63 - thats 1p per 137KB. At that rate, id get 205500KB per £15, which works out to be 200MB or so. Of course, it only affects me if i leave the internet running (which i do while im nearby), but id like to know if i am being charged for time-usage as well as data, or if im actually losing my obviously precious pennies? :P

Hi,CS_Moneybags,I am the same as you Payg how about a test,I will leave my computer running connected to the Internet doing nothing for 30 mins,we could start the test at 10.00 in 6 mins and post back when the 30 mins is up with results of how many pennys we have used, let me know.

Well,I did a 30 minute test,I had £12.87 when I started at 10.00 and £12.85 when It finished at 10.30 I used 280kb in them 30mins.Cost 2p
I will start the next test now.22.40 had £12.85 23.10 had £12.82 used 276kb in that 30 mins.Cost 3p
Used total 556kb
Cost Total 5p??????
Anyway point been, looks very similar to your results 3p after 34mins used 274kb
To be honest I dont know how it works it out all i do know is that i usually get about 930mb for my £15.00,that is not exact but not far away, next time I top up I will reset everything, that way i will know how many mb i have had for £15.

So it isnt only me lol... although i dont think the effect is as noticable when your actually using the internet, i dont think we should be being charged to idle unless we're actually told

The way i worked out the cost per megabyte:

1024 (megabytes) / 1500 (pennies) = 0.6827p per megabyte

So anyone else getting this problem, or is it meant to be happening?

Hi again,I think you will find that the cost of each megabyte is more like 1.5p

1500/1024=1.46 to make sure 1.46484375*1024=1500
Anyway as you say It does seem to be worse when you are not doing much with the connection going to do some longer tests today, going swimming with the kids so i will leave it connected when i leave, and any kb/mb used will be counted by my usage meter catches everything.

Hi,Did another quick 30 minute test, but this time when I left the connection on I closed down my browser and just left the computer running with the view of the desktop, internet connection still active.
Start 12.00 £12.17
Finish 12.30 £12.17
Used 426kb
So this time 426kb cost 0p
Interesting

All the vodafone guy there said was the data counter isnt very accurate, but is it honestly this bad? From what that guy said and from my experience, we're paying 2-3 times more than we should, just doesnt seem right
