Just did a quick test, left the internet on for 34 mins, started at £10,66 balance, used 274KB and now im down to 10.63 - thats 1p per 137KB. At that rate, id get 205500KB per £15, which works out to be 200MB or so. Of course, it only affects me if i leave the internet running (which i do while im nearby), but id like to know if i am being charged for time-usage as well as data, or if im actually losing my obviously precious pennies? |
Hi CS_Moneybags,
We only charge for data downloaded and uploaded - not the time spent connected.
There are however two things to keep in mind with regards to your tests here
Firstly, billing is calculated in 10KB steps, and for each connected session, the cost is rounded up to the nearest penny. This will explain why sometimes it seems like you've not been charged any extra, and at other times the charge seems to jump up a bit.
Secondly, not all traffic types are able to be recorded by our usage monitor, so while you think you're not browsing, you are actually still sending and receiving data. Your IM client running in the background is a perfect example, as this will persistantly send and receive small amounts of data to keep the connection alive and record every little status change of your contacts, etc. Things like virus checker updates and windows updates are other things to be mindful of when leaving your internet connection idle for any period of time.
I trust this helps to clear up where the extra pennies are going
