Solution

Payg On Apple Os X

I was excited to read about the PAYG mobile broadband which very much interests me.

However, very disappointed to read that Vodafone have not yet been able to get it working on Apple's OS X operating system.

Do you have any timescales for getting this working?

Hmm... It has absolutely nothing to do with device firmware at all; billing and topping up is done at account level, within the network. My understanding was that you just registered an online account, entered the dongle as a device, and could manage it from there- nothing to do with the dongle, firmware, OS, or client software version...

Is there any kind of notification thing I can sign up to (RSS, SMS, Email etc) for when PAYG with out of the box Mac support is available? That would be really handy.

yeah i hear that Neil , but putting credit on via a "pin Plane" would be firmware basted, or so i assume, anyhows this is all second guessed as i don't really know until i do run out of credit it would be nice all the same to have the same features "Windows" users have

think I may have a solution , download the "Darwine" app, here>>> http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/<<< this allows for "windows" apps (with out needing a windows os, different to an emulator) to run natively on OSX (tiger/leopard) , in the "Darwine helper" tab, add the vodafone "windows" firmware and open, this is a interesting avenue , let you know if it works.

p.s will only work for intel macs , no support for ppc macs.

How odd- I thought that online top-up was possible...

It is.

I've been using TU&G on a Mac for a couple of months. Works fine. After initial activation I ditched the Mac contract software altogether. You can check your balance online and, for several weeks now, online topup for TU&G has been available.

To keeb tabs on my day-to-day usage, I use a very basic 3rd party usage meter.

Hi Colinr, I agree, that would be a fantastic option but it's not available at the moment for you to sign up for :(

Keep an eye on the forum though as we'll bring you any news as we have it :D

hey LCT

yup after inital contact has been established you don't need the "contract" firmwear (drivers, in windows speak) to push the dongle, thats captured in "network"

sure you can open a "my account" with vodafone on line to manage your credit and add to it. mmm will that let you add via shop bought credit voucher?

Darwine seems to be working for me at the moment .

Never used a topup voucher but the option's certainly there in MyAccount - 15 quid vouchers only, of course. Topup by card works fine.

Hi, do we have any news yet of when PAYG Broadband will be officially supported for Macs? I'm really keen to get one but I'm put off by the local of support from Vodafone.

Hi rhutchi2,

We don't have any news on the official support yet - however, as I'm sure you're aware, it is possible to get these modems working on Macs "as is" with a little tweaking :)

We're not allowed to tell you how, strictly speaking, but I'm sure one of our other eForum Faithful can write a short guide to the process if you're interested :)
