If you go to your display settings and scroll down to screen timeout, you will be able to change the setting but the screen should stay on longer than one second.
I have mine set to 30 seconds which gives ample time to read a quick SMS.

Thanks sounds sensible but I can't find that option, but I have discovered if turn WI-FI off it behaves quite normally! I assume I don't need to be connected to WI-FI to sned and receive messages it will simply use vodafone ?

Text messages are sent over the network, WiFi is only for internet access.
You should have something for screen timeout on your display settings.

Which phone model are you using ?
Having Wifi enabled wouldn't / shouldn't affect the screen timeout.
Ah I see the Vodafone Smart First 6.
