Received A Invalid Response

I'm now getting so hacked off - can anyone help? More and more websites are not loading and just giving me a blank screen with
Received a invalid response

It started about 2 months ago - my laptop was knackered,
so I just thought it was that - but I now have a new laptop - top of the range
Windows 7 - it works perfectly, except I'm still getting
Received a invalid response
And it's now started on more sites.
Anyone know a solution or is this a reason for getting rid of the dongle?

I suggest you try setting your laptop to use OpenDNS - Go to this link here --> http://www.opendns.com/ and you'll find loads of instructions on how to set up your PC to use Opendns instead of Vodafone's default settings.

Thanks for the reply - but I wouldn't want to install something like that on my laptop.

Hi Kalvin,

We'd like to investigate this further for you. Can you provide us with a list of websites which are affected, and some idea of how frequently the problem occurs?

Thanks in advance :)

If you are using an old version of VMC it's possible there are fixed dns ips which will now often not respond.
At least ensure that in properties for the connection you have dns set to obtain addresses automatically. If
already set to automatic, it's possible you have a different connection problem other than dns failures.

I can't see your problem with using opendns ips as you don't need to install anything unless you consider
replacing your existing dns settings with 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 as an install.

Hi David - thanks for that - it is set to automatic. That's why I'm stumped - nothing changed when it suddenly occurred and stayed - I at first thought it was my laptop, but as I have changed laptops, I assume it's my dongle. Chap from vodafone says he will have a look, so I'll try that route. But, I'll have another look at the website you suggested - it looked to me to be just a security software, but as you say it doesn't need to be installed I'll try that. Thanks again for your assistance.

I agree regarding OpenDNS - if you first look at the page - all you see is a "Free" version with ad-ware with some premium options for money - with a big "buy now" button.

However, if you look at the bottom right you will find two IP addresses (orange font on black background) - these are open DNS servers. You can set these IP addresses to replace the get DNS automatically in your network settings.

If you have a problem with using OpenDNS - do a search on Google for "Public DNS Resolvers in UK". There are quite a few lists of publically accessable DNS resolvers that you can use instead of Vodafone's or OpenDNS's. e.g.

Hi Jon
Xtube & the pirate bay - a few others but I have no idea now what they were. I quite simply cannot open any page on them - it just comes up with a totally white page with "Received a invalid response" on it. Checked the source and it just shows that message. I don't have any kind of parental watch - on my last laptop (when it first started) I didn't have any virus software - I have norton 360 antivirus, and again no parental (or equivalent) controls. Anyway - any help would be gratefully accepted.

Doesn't look like this by any chance?

If so - this has been a known problem since March for me. Although it affects all websites equally. Have never really recieved either a reason/fix by Vodafone in that time. I still have this problem from time to time same as many other people.

If you want some reading - you can look here...
http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=22267

The reason for the problem is Vodafone's proxy servers. The only way to get around the problem is to not use the Vodafone proxies. As the Vodafone's proxy servers are transparent - all web traffic passes through them - bypassing them is hard.

My setup is ultra complex and implements an encrypted VPN and my own proxy servers and a server on the Internet to get around the Vodafone problems. If I didn't do that - I wouldn't have usable Internet at all...

I just wished they would fix it - 8 Months and still counting. 😞

Hey there Kalvin_Chapman,

Shame to hear this :(

It could be the modem at fault - can you tell us what speed you're connecting at, and how that relates to the light on the modem? Can you try the SIM in another modem, or even a mobile phone to see if there is a performance increase?

If it's actually the network, then this is a completely different issue and one that we'd need to raise a fault. If you're connecting at 3G (or HSDPA) with a blue / turquoise light, can you try setting to 2G only via the Vodafone Mobile Connect (download the latest version here if you need to)? Is your connect more stable, albeit slower?

Please let us know your findings to these queries and I'm confident that we'll resolve this for you!
