Solution

Reverse DNS (PTR) records

I have recently upgraded my internet connection to Business Fiber 76 from Demon ADSL and as part of the upgrade I purchased a block of static IP addresses - configurable through the Vodafone router (I was told).

It is essential that the IP address for my email server has a PTR (reverse DNS) record configured so that properly configured email servers will accept my email messages. I send invoices to customers and remittance advice notes to suppliers, amongst other things.

Unfortunately there appears to be a problem getting this done. There is also a problem getting a message to someone who knows what to do. I have communicated with someone using the support chat, who gave me a phone number for the relevant people. When I got through I was told that getting PTR records set is impossible.

Note: I sent an email reply to four people yesterday. The original sender and three CCd recipients. The email servers for three of the recipients rejected the message because there is no PTR record configured.

Does anyone know either:

a) How to configure the PTR records for your .../29 block of addresses,

or

b) How to get a message to the relevant person at Vodafone who knows how to edit the correct zone file and add PTR records?

Thanks.

I have found the solution and my PTR records are now correct.

The process is as follows:

Identify your IP address, or the relevant IP address that you require the PTR record to be set on.

At the command line run "whois <IP Address>"

In the returned information, locate the "AS" number.

At the command line run "whois <AS Number>" e.g. "whois AS1234"

In the returned information there should be an email address for the correct team.

I found that they are very helpful and will advise you on what needs to be done and/or verified and will then notify the DNS team as required.

Note: If you just run "whois <IP Address>" the only email address returned is the abuse contact.

No. That is the wrong address.

At the command line do "whois <IP Address>" and in the data returned you will find a line that has a value "ASxxxx".

Do "whois" again but with the AS number. Look through the returned data and you will find the relevant email address. I think that it has probably been put in the place that it has in order to stop robots identifying it and spamming it.

Why not ncipsupport_at_vodafone.co.uk which is shown after entering both of the whois Linux commands?

Just wrote to them, wating to find out if they reply, and even more if Simon8 has actually managed to get them to set up the PTR record for him?

Ohh thanks for update, there seems to be some hope then....

Although in my case still no static IP after another 24h wait, clearly yet again lie from Vodafone CS.

Yes, they are set as required.

Apologies for going off topic, mcc05 you did mention you had problems getting static IP.  Can I ask how you resolved it? I been week now I should have it with service activation and I'm losing patience with CS.

They keep apologizing and asking me to wait 24h every time..  I haven't seen any email confirmation or anything. IP is still dynamic. Perhaps there is other number or email I can use to contact someone form VF who can get it sorted.

Thanks

No i had no problem with static ip when after no joy with CS I found the option on my business broadband account page to enable one. when I did this I got one in about 3 hrs

thanks, I did look within online account if there is anything I can add like with phone like extras, but could not find broadband extras page.. althouth there were some errors I thin . Just tried to look again but still waiting for security code... thats another thing which is quite tempremental and sometimes doesnt work.

finally received text to log in, but there is no options available to enable or request stati IP.. Under broadband Services and extras I can only see

Content controls

Content control profile

Blocked websites

Router on/off times

when clicking on Upgrade or Change Plan I get:
Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later.

You wouldn't remember where it was? Was it within MyVodafone ?

so I went to services and extras under broadband and at the bottom is another menu additional features and the static ip is under that
