hi graeme ; the vmcc software is identical for contract / payg so you should be able to send; it is chargeable ; do you have a desktop icon that says "vodafone sms"? if not (if you got a cd rom with the usb) delete the app and reinstall using the cd.
Check your text message settings are they correct?
Click on 'Tools'
select 'SMS settings' on your Mobile Connect dashboard.
The operator should be set to 'Vodafone UK' and
the message centre number set to +447785016005
