Sim swap/Phone change

I currently have an iphone 4 on contract. My phone is not yet eligible to upgrade so I'm thinking of buying a separate phone then doing a sim swap to fit that phone. Will this work?

A Sim Swap moves your number and tariff to either a new sim card or a different sized sim to fit in a new phone so yes that would be fine. 

Vodafone don't care what phone you choose to use.

The simplest way of doing what you want to do is once you have the new phone to go into a Vodafone store where they will be able to supply a new sim, if needed, and also to activate the sim whilst you are in the store.
