Slow speeds at peak times? Leave!

Since leaving Vodafone and switching to BT in April, I haven't had any drop in my throughput/actual/download speeds. I have attached a guide on the definitions of sync and throughput speed (if you didn't know already), as well as what rights you have as a consumer - produced by Vodafone.

If you have been tralling through this forum for a solution or an explanation to this, like I was, I wanted to share what Vodafone call support have told me, out of sympathy probably.

  • There are too many people subscribed to Vodafone's broadband network in some areas of the region - as a result, throughput speeds are limited in the evenings.
  • This is purely because the hardware (cabling in the cabinets) in these areas is obselete and cannot cope with the ever increasing demand. Openreach are in the process of upgrading/repairing the hardware and then migrating customers over to it in my area of Maidstone on behalf of Vodafone, but there is no definitive completion date.
  • *applies to contracts before March* your bill cannot be reduced, since the issue is meant to be temporary. If you stick with them until it's sorted, you'll be credited afterwards.
  • For me, the problem is exclusive to Vodafone - contrary to what I was told. As mentioned above, I passed the 30 day run-in period with BT today (6th May) with no issue - I wanted to wait until today before making this claim.

If you can, I'd recommend that you begin the process of leaving. I took out an 18 month contract that was supposed to end in March 19. I reported a drop in speed for the first time in October, and gave them 5 months for them to fix it before giving up and leaving - no argument, no penalty for leaving early.

Last thing, do not bother using live chat for technical issues - phone only.
