Topup And Go (topup Options)

Mr Tiddler
Not applicable
I'm using my TopUp and Go Sim in a Dell Linux laptop with it's own modem, and all is working fine.
(I'd rather not have been forced to buy a USB modem though which I don't need).

Anyway, as I'm not using your Windows software, I'm wondering what my topup options are.
I read that I had to buy a £15 Voucher.

I assume I could use other options to topup (e.g. at a cashpoint) as long as the topup is £15?

Also, do I have to wait for my balance to reach £0 before I topup? Or can I put £15 credit on there while I still have a balance of a few pounds?

Many thanks for your help.

As with Mr Tiddler, I have put my sim directly into my netbook running UNR (Ubuntu Netbook Remix) and it "just worked" - I can surf to my hearts content. However, I am unable to determine when I'm about to run out of credit without logging into the web portal - in itself a problem as I didn't have an idea of the phone number on the card, and had to install the dongle software onto another friends PC in order to find it.

Is there any intention to release a Linux version of the manager software ? Failing that, can the Windows executable be made available for running in wine (I can't see the software when I plug the dongle into my PC...), or, even better, would the developers release the source code for us mad programmers to work on to try to provide an open source version?

Many thanks,

DM

I can't see how to automate this on Ubuntu but usually have a terminal with script running and use command
"ifconfig ppp0" at start and end of sessions which gives bytes transferred.

Pppd allows for custom scripts to be run at start and end of connection which would make a usage counter
trivial but none of content of /etc/ppp on my system looks relevant to vodafone connections.

Not something I have looked into before I must admit 😉 However I will investigate. I do find the NetworkManager applet very useful though, as it is so user friendly...

I have problem that it occasionally refuses to connect since it believes it's already connected
(or that modem is already in use). I suspect the modem lock file hasn't been cleared but I've
not been able to find where it hides. I try to make sure I close the connection and disconnect
the dongle before hitting shutdown which seems to help avoid the problem. Other problem with
Network Manager is the default is/was to use fixed vodafone dns ips which is conventional and
correct except on planet vodafone where dns ips can change so I've had to set to use pppd
supplied dns servers rather than the default.

As far as I know both Network Manager and VMC are just wrappers for pppd and on NetBSD
I've just cribbed from settings used on Ubuntu and XP, and can use 'pppd call vodafone', which
gives as good a connection as on Ubuntu or XP. I don't have the extra ppp-up and ppp-down
scripts in place yet which are used to automate settin/resetting routing and dns.

I've never managed to get VMC working but again have found (though not yet tried) some scripted
methods that are supposed to work for send/receive of sms.

Hey guys,

It's frustrating for us as we want you guys to have a great experience with the product... but the Linux side of things remains yet to be officially supported :(.

This said, thanks to the guys at Betavine and all the clever work that they do, I don't think it'll be long before we pull Linux 'into the fold' of our official support.

I'm sure some of our community can help on this one - anyone want to contribute?

If the connection manager source code was to be made open source under a GNU licence, I'm sure the linux community would be more than happy to help in the development of it to port it across to linux... :)

You can/could download the sources of the beta3.
There are various licences in the tarball. BSD/GPL/LGPL/MIT

I couldn't get it to compile on NetBSD but didn't try too hard and gave up once I was reliably
connecting by manual pppd.

I think it is just python wrappers around pppd. Details are/were on the Betavine website.
