I had a dispute with vodaphone and was passed around given a different message each time. I asked them to close my account and I fell behind with payments. I received a letter from a debt collector and phoned to make a payment. I didn't hear any more from them. I then spoke to someone at vodaphone who gave me account details of where to make payments. I set up a standing order to make payments only to find out the payments were not being taken from the debt. I contacted vodaphone by live chat who gave me the debt agency details who apparently had my debt. When I tried to set up payments the debt agency they kept telling me they had no account for me. I was told they had passed the debt back to vodaphone when I made the payment. After hours of live chat and being told the same thing and nobody having any record of the current debt company I gave up. This obviously is a black mark on my credit score. I phoned vodaphone the last time in about April this year and after speaking to a number of people someone called me back. They told me the debt had been moved to a different agency and that he would make sure the money I had paid would come off the debt. He said he would send me the details of the agency so I could contact them to make payments. I'm still waiting. I know I am at fault for falling behind with payments but I have tried to amend this. I had an excellent credit score before this and I can't even clear the debt. How can I resolve this clear my debt and remove the default from my record so I can get a mortgage.

It's certainly the right move to get the debt paid so it will then change its status on your Credit File from Outstanding to Settled which does look better to anyone conducting a search on your Credit File.
However as the default does sound it is warranted it would usually remain on your Credit File for the required 6 Years duration.
