Solution

Using My Mobile Broadband Sim Card In A Nokia E71

I'm connecting to the internet just fine using my mobile broadband contract SIM card in my (unlocked) Nokia E71. But I have a problem with streaming video and audio from the internet. This works fine when I used my WLAN to access the internet. And I can use my E71 as a wireless modem for my laptop and stream OK to the laptop. But I can't stream directly to the E71 via its Vodafone Internet GPRS or Vodafone live! settings. Is there another set of settings out there? Or something else I need to do?

Many thanks.

I'm not sure that GPRS will give you enough bandwidth to stream video. How are you connecting to the phone? If it is bluetooth that will also limit your browsing/streaming experience. You bluetooth will connect at about 115kbps but a percentage of this is used by bluetooth for handshaking. I can connect by cable to my Nokia N73 and stream video but only if I have a 3G signal (and alot of money in my wallet!). Vodafone PAYT mobile broadband is easily faster enough to stream BBCi without jamming in 3G reception.

Thanks, but this isn't quite what I want to do. I have a contract mobile broadband account and have put the SIM from my dongle into my Nokia E71 mobile phone which I use solely for accessing the internet. I can surf fine but haven't yet managed to stream to the phone using my mobile broadband account. I can use the E71 as a wireless (WLAN not bluetooth) access point and establish streaming on my laptop. And I can stream to the phone using my home WLAN. Who knows what might work in getting streaming to the phone via mobile broadband?

Hi ds1111,

Welcome to the eForum :D

We are currently aware of issues with streaming over the Vodafone network, which we are working to resolve as quickly as possible.
You can find more details in this announcement. We will update that post as soon as we have more news.

I apologise for the temporary inconvenience.

Thanks for your welcome! This seems to be taking longer to sort out than originally anticipated. Is there light on the horizon?

Hi DS111,

I must admit, I'm really confused as to the context of the word streaming - I'm thinking, like Jon, you're referring to video!

We've got no update on this at the moment, but just to clarify, you do need to be in a 3G or 3G+ area to utilise streaming video as any less bandwidth will not succeed. If we've got the wrong end of the stick, if you can provide further detail as to what you're attempting to accomplish with more definition, I'm confident we can provide a clearer answer based on this further understanding :)

We'll certainly let you know when we know more!

If perhaps you're interested in learning more about the fantastic E71's features, why not check out our E71 Help page?

Thanks for this. I have a 3G connection which, on a good day, manages to become 3.5G. Perhaps the best way of explaining what I want to do is to refer you to http://test.orb.com. I click on the 'Real Player' option and pick one of the choices of what to start streaming. The Real Player logo appears on my screen, it connects via Vodafone Live! and the 'Loading' window comes up, at which point it gets stuck and, after about half a minute, displays a time out message. But it's just the Vodafone Live! connection that's the problem - when I connect to the internet via my wireless LAN it works fine. Does that clarify the issue?

Hi - are you able to respond to my response on this one?

I see from http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?act=...;f=50&id=35 that the issue mentioned by Jon earlier in the thread has been resolved. But not for me!

Just to recap, using http://test.orb.com as an example, I can stream video to my E71 via my home WLAN but not via Vodafone Live. Why is this?

Thanks.

Hi ds1111,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this issue.

I believe the problem here is likely to be a firewall problem on our side. For security, most streaming services need to be explicitely allowed on the Vodafone firewall. Since selecting RealPlayer will tell the phone to connect over our WAP Gateway, it also forces the phone to comply to our firewall rules, and if the streaming service is not an approved provider, then it'll get blocked (which is what appears to be happening here).

I've tested the Audio samples on another phone, and they appear to be working fine - but the video is not, which suggests it could either be the firewall issue above, or a problem with the formatting of the video itself which is causing it to fail.

I'm afraid we don't have a solution to either of these problems at the moment, but I will let you know if I find out anything more :)

OK, thanks for this. Is there any way in which the Orb network can become an 'approved provider'?
