Solution

Vmc Instalation Error

Hi,

I can´t to install VMC lite. When installation starts, a message appears saying I need administrative privileges to install... but I´m logged in as Administrator

I´m using Windows 2000 SP4. I´m installing the v.9.4.5 version, and I tried with older versions too (v.9.4.3 and v.9.4.4) and I get the same error message.

I´m only found threads about Windows XP, and solutions related with Windows SP installation. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced

Hi MA Gonzalez,

Welcome to the eForum :) just out of interest have you had your USB dongle working before you tried the software upgrade? I've checked the software requirements for the versions you've been trying to install and I'm afraid none of these support Windows 2000. The minimum requirement is Windows XP. I'd recommend sticking to the version you've been using before if you're been able to go online.

Alternatively you can try the following instructions to set up Dial-Up Networking (DUN). These instructions were written for Windows XP but should be similar for Windows 2000:

1. Go to Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, select Modems Tab
2. Highlight the VMC device installed and select properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab and enter AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet” in the Extra Initialisation Command field.
4. Click Apply and OK to save changes

DUN Settings for Windows:

1. Go to Start Menu / Control Panel / Network Connections / Create a new Connection
2. Choose "Connect to the Internet"
3. Select "Set up my Connection Manually"
4. Select "Connect Using Dial-up Modem"
5. Ensure the VMC Device is selected/ticked (and nothing else).
6. ISP Name = "Connection Name", (call it anything you like).
7. Enter the Phone number: *99***1#
8. Username & Password = web & web
9. Click "Finish" to complete.

Let me know if this brings any joy and I'll do my best to lend a hand.

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

thanks for reply :)

I have a new one, but my USB dongle is working: we install VMC in two laptops for remote support, and one is working fine (running Windows XP)

I looked for OS minimun requirements, but I saw both W2K and WXP, and only XP minimun too; I´m confusing about this... but you clarify to me this question: W2K is not compatible

For use DUN, first I need to install USB dongle driver, but I don´t have it.

I think that the best solution for me is to upgrade to XP, and meanwhile using my mobile phone to access Internet

Thanks again for support

Can you install the dongle itself and cannot install VMC lite? Do I get it right?

If yes, then you can use the software that 3-UK and other providers use around the world, when they don't want to customize network-specifically their dongles; that's MOBILE PARTNER. Please have in mind that by using this software, you do not lose your warranty, neither can you unlock your dongle; Vodefone also cannot be held responsible for UFUP (unfair usage policy, get overcharged for excessive data usage etc) due to software issues; that's mainly because every company have control over its own software, and know that they make it for each devce flawlessly. Until now I never had any problem like that, and I had to use MobilePartner on my mac due to Huawei K3715 incompatibility with MacOS. If you agree with that then Google it and look for the Windows 2000 version. Install it, and connect your stick .This replaces your VMC Lite or VMC full interface, so do not expect correct data/usage readings, or settings for volume or time limits. It's just a plain piece of software.

If that's not the case, then look on Huawei website or google again for Huawei XXXXX Windows 2000 drivers, or ZTE, or whichever company produced your data stick.

I hope that this will help you :)

Upgrading to XP is definately a good solution! Upgrading to Windows 7 is the best solution. At the same amount of RAM and same CPU as you use for a WXP maching, you can go for W7. You will be going a bit slower, but you will be more stable. Also have in mind that Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP in March 2010 (correct me if I'm wrong), as they did with Windows 2000 2-3 years ago, so you risk finding yourself in a frustrating situation again, as all new devices will be coming pre-set for Windows 7!

As about internet-over-a-mobile, if you have a Nokia, Samsung, or iPhone device, you can use the Internet Tethering option that these companies offer. Especially on Samsung H1 and M1 Vodafone 360 devices, you get that option once you connect the handset via USB and on iPhone from the Network settings pane.

I wish you best of luck :D
