Vodafone Pay v Android Pay

Just wanted to say that I have started using Vodafone Pay to use my phone to make contactless payments after experiencing a frustrating time with Android Pay.

VP is much more reliable that AP, which seemed to fail about half the time, especially in certain stores but VP, using the same bank card and device hasn't failed once.

Good work.

The main one I had problems with was Tesco, over half the time using AP didn't work, but using the bank card itself on a contactless basis did. This shows that there was no problem with the machine in the store but with the AP app.

I've had similar issues in Asda but it's been down to Signal/ connection being poor.

Are you aware of the 5 transaction a day limit on vodafone wallet ?

I found this the hard way when i found myself outside without my wallet, but my phone. I decided to continue since i had my Vodafone wallet and phone with me, and thougt i could manage. However after a few succesful transactions , the wallet stopped working and it got declined everywhere. I called in, and found the wallet app has a 5 transaction a day limit.  It is likely my fault and I overlooked this somewhere , however a warning or something visible would have been helpful even as i approached my fourth or fifth transaction.

Anyways, i think this 5 transaction limit makes it impractical for my use and I have since switched to an alternate payment app.

This is also a major con compared to the othger services

Going to bump an old thread rather than creating a new one.

I've recently purchased an S8 and I've set up Samsung Pay on it, which so far works pretty well, I like the fact that you have to confirm it with a fingerprint or iris scan, better from what I have read about AP.

However, I've just received my new NFC sim from Vodafone for Vodafone pay and I've set it up and it's asking me to replace Samsung Pay as my main contactless method, the question is should I?

What pros and cons there between the two? I quite like the two pros VP offer which is:

  • Enter pin for anything over £30
  • Can still use contactless even if the battery has died on.

I have seen a lot of negative reviews on the Play Store about the Vodafone Wallet app not being reliable though so it puts me off!

Any advice would be great!

I was a daily user of vodafone pay , till i ran into a couple of problems an decided against it

1. There is a daily limit of 5 transactions on vodafone pay.  Not on other payment options like apple pay or samsung pay

2. I dont think Vodafone pay will work if the battery has run out in spite of what it says in the blurb. It needs the NFC security from the OS, which means the phone must be on. This was my number one reason to use the platform, but I found this out the hard way when trying to exit a tube station using the switched off phone as the payment method. I may have been doing something wrong here, but i am fairly certain this is the case.

Thanks for the reply!

Ah yes, I saw your comment about the limits to 5 transactions, that indeed is a big issue, especially if you are out all day!

I see what you are saying regarding the OS needing to communicate however from what I've read the way VP works is just the same as AP, so it only needs a tap, which is different to how SP works, which requires the user to confirm payment; it could be that something was not quite correct with your phone for some reason....

I will test it out in next few days to see if it works and report back.

the 5 transaction limt was a killer for me.. i got stuck without my wallet on a day out, but decided to continue since i had the phone with me.. and then got stuck with the 5 transaction limit.

will wait to hear how you get on with the pay working when phone is off.  My phone froze up when i tried to pay at the tube gates. I had to power the phone off. I tried to pay when the phone was switched off,  but no luck. I had to wait till my phone restarted before it would work again.

Out of curiosity do you have a Samsung device?

As a matter of interest, where are you seeing the 5 transcations limit?   It's not, afaik, in any of the info in the app itself.   I've been using it for a long time and never encountered it, though I may not have reached, let alone tried to exceed, that number.   There is a 200 euro in 30 days limit, but you can get that lifted by supplying evidence of identity.  I'm trying to find out why that is, as the underlying payment is via the card/s registered and they have presumably confirmed identity.   Does anyone know if Android Pay has similar restrictions?

Vodafone Wallet is a polished product and the problems I've had with it seem to be hardware/OS-related - restarting the phone has cured them.  I haven't attempted to use it with the phone off.
