Hi all,
I recently applied for mortgage but I have a default on my credit account from March 2016 for a nominal amount of £24.
Back in March 2016 I called Vodafone to cancel my account who advised and confirmed I could.
However I was told at the time by a Vodafone rep that there was no final bill to be paid as I am reached the end of my 2 year period, I presumed this to be true as I had reached the end of contract and paid to date back then via direct debit as previously agreed. So cancelled my direct debit.
I received a letter confirming my account had been closed some days later which I have a copy of. However it wasn’t until some time after that I found out that a nominal amount was outstanding on my bill and that Vodafone had apparenty been chasing this final payment however my phone number was not in use anymore.
I then paid the amount outstanding, however on trying to apply for a mortgage recently, my finacial adviser carried out a credit file search and found a Vodafone default on file. I have no other blemishes on my record and have had credit and loans since, which I can’t understand why its not come to light sooner/affected me getting loans and credit since which have been fully paid.
The default is affecting my credit file now, and it is unlikely I will get a mortgage because of it.
Myself and partner have struggled to save up for a deposit but finally got where we need to be, only to discover this. I am 34 years old and if I put off getting a mortgage any longer it will become more difficult, my partner is also expexting a child in September. So having this occur has affectively ruined our lives.
I don’t think it is fair, as this was a misunderstanding. Why would I call to cancel my account in advance, only to knowingly not pay the last nominal amount and have it affect my credit file!
I have called Vodafone to discuss only to be fobbed off continously, with no change.
Our lives and plans are ruined now, I pay rent and have done on time for over 10 years and can’t even get a mortgage. It’s terrible, and Vodafone’s business is ruthless and brutal, with little understanding.
I am going round in circles.
Please help.
