I seem to have had an installation problem of VMC programme installed on Windows 8 Acer laptop and as I am trying to uninstall it before reinstallation I am getting the following

"error 1722 There is a problem with windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact support personnel or package vendor. Action DWUS_Unregister. C3A146F5_4B48_11D5_A819_00B0D0428C0C, location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common files\InsatllShield\UpdateServices\.command: C\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\agent.exe/u{C65614F-EFE1-44CD-BFAD-6CBC6DCB9860}

The removal process then hangs up and will not complete

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated

Thanks for that advice.

Tried it all to no avail.... However eventually, having trawled the got to the Microsoft "fix it" program which allows installation and uninstallation for "jammed" programs which did the trick. Hurrah

Hi,

OK, so probably the first thing to mention is that most versions of VMC aren't supported, or have been tested against windows 7, so it's unlikely that they've been tested against Windows 8 either.

That said, when we tried using VMC with Windows 8 here it worked OK, and we didn't experience the issues that you are. So I guess the first question is; is this on a machine that you've upgraded to Windows 8 or did Windows 8 come preinstalled?

Without wanting to state the obvious, it looks like the issue you have is related to Windows installer. Do you know what version of Windows installer you have running on your machine.

As a thought, you might be able to remove the reg key that populates the VMC entry in programs and features, then install a more recent version of VMB over the top, then uninstall this, and it MIGHT get rid of the installation. I'm not sure what the reg key is off hand, but I'll try and find out for you.

Also, what USB modem is it that you have? To a degree this dictates the options you have with regards to version of VMC/VMB, so it would be a handy piece of information to know.

If you could let us know the information requested above it would be great and we can probably offer some more advice. I'll have a look into the reg key and let you know.

Cheers,

HC

Hi,

I'm still looking into the key mentioned in my previous post, but I've come up with soem better ideas!

So after doing a bit of research, it looks like there are  two tasks called "Agent.exe" and "ISUSPM.exe" appear and also stay when VMC is uninstalled. Obviously you're not having a problem with ISUSPM.exe, so you can probably ignor ehte steps associated with is detailed below.

These tasks belong to the Macrovision "Software Updates" feature, which is installed by VMC but can also be used by other software. This is the reason why it is not uninstalled when VMC is uninstalled.

There are two ways to get rid of it:
1) Without uninstalling the software:
- Open the "Software Updates" tool (usually you can find it when you click <Start>)
- Go into the settings
- Change when the tool should look for updates to "manual" for both critical and importanmt updates
- after reboot the "Agent.exe" should not be running anymore
- to get rid of the ISUSPM.exe you have to delete a key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In here you'll find the key for the ISUSPM, just delete it

If that fails then you could try a silent uninstall of VMC, to do this use the following command line:

MsiExec.exe /x{Product ID of installed VMC software} /qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress

You can find the Product ID in following registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion\Uninstall\{…… }

And if that fails then there is also the Windows installer clean up utility, altough I'm not sure if it's win 8 centric:

If you're still having problems after all of this do let us know. It woudl also be good for us to know the version of VMC that you're using.

Cheers,

HC
