new master socket at installation

MY house has no master socket. Will the engineer install one when they activate the new BB service? If so can I choose where in the house?

Hopefully Openreach will have it on their records that there is no master socket - if not they may expect you to perform a self-install (send you the modem/router and expect you to plug it in).

If the records are correct then the engineer will probably give you the option of where on the side of the house the cable is entering that the socket can be located - within reason!

*Be kind to your engineer, offer them tea/coffee etc, but give them space!

If you're getting Superfast broadband then yes they will need to fit one for you.
If you're getting Ultrafast broadband then you'll only need an ONT instead, this is much the same but connects to the fibre network rather than copper.
The install location of either will depend on a few things, primarily where the connection enters your property. You typically have to choose a location on an outside wall, usually somewhere near a power source (the ONT needs to be pulled in)
In both cases, it's best to talk to the engineer when they arrive to see what options are available for your specific property

Thank you that’s very helpful. It is super fast - from a new fibre installation in our street. I was curious to know as V info / vids only seem to refer to connecting to a master socket. But your explanation makes sense. Thanks.

You say it is Superfast, from a new fibre installation. That means it will effectively be a Gigafast installation as it will probably be FTTP (Fibre to the Property) as opposed to FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet).

Is the new fibre in the street Openreach or CityFibre?

It’s city fibre.

It will definitely be FTTP then. The engineer will lay a new fibre cable to the house and install the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) usually on the inside of an external wall.
