Broadband Going live tomorrow FTTP - Questions please

TechnicalMarvel

So tomorrow my FTTP broadband is going live, except the one major problem is that vodafone have neglected to send me a router which is frustrating and not the best start.  Im transitioning from Sky FTTC and have been using my TP-Link VR2800.  I'm not expecting any issues with the speed as the Fibre cabling outside my house is only a couple of months old, and I finally managed to extract the username and password for the router to connect from Vodafone after first being told 'we dont do that'.  I need to know please if there are any further config changes needed for IPv6 or is this no longer a thing on FTTP apart from putting it into wireless router mode and connecting it to the the new box openreach install.  I also dont have enable 802.1q on the router.  I would also like to know please if its possible to turn off the 5GHz wifi on the vodafone router when if and when it arrives.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I've found that the service with sky at least is much much better.  the VF agents who you speak to when you call through dont appear to know what theyre doing and what policies are.

Perhaps that's what you have to put up with to get a cheaper price. It shouldn't be that way, but yes support at Vodafone is terrible.

Be aware that pings on vodafone FTTP will be significantly higher than on sky FTTC. The gigafast package is way over subscribed and VF route people miles away from their local gateway to reduce congestion.

If it’s not upto standard I will be exercising my 14 day cooling off period.  Either way I had to leave Sky.  I refuse point blank to pay £35.50 for 61mb which is the MGLS for me and they refused to budge!   When it’s installed and running I’ll post back and see how things are performing.

It'll run fast but it'll be no good for gaming as your pings will be 100ms

After the recent info posted by a member who has already declared he's leaving vodafone I feel the need to reassure you that the ping problem, while it is a current issue, affects only a tiny minority of users and certainly not as bad as they affirm. I went through this issue myself, never saw a ping above 23ms. Much of the upgrade work has been completed and users are being returned to their normal gateways.

Just like on any other forum this place has it's TROLLS.

@purrbox has their own opinions on things. Now they have stopped blaming everything on CityFibre they are convinced Vodafone are going to make everyone get routed via Edinburgh.

Please, when you do get connected, let us know how it goes, and also let us know your gateway address.

It might just persuade them they are wrong. (or it may prove them right, in which case we will all have egg on our faces)

Hope you don't live in Edinburgh

Well here we are all done and dusted.  After some initial issues with my speed, and after a supreme amount of geekiness on my part, i managed to solve it.   The homeplug my pc is connected too had some interference so i wired directly into the network switch in my bedroom and its working great.  .  I'm seeing 9meg extra on my 100meg package, very low ping on xbox and everything is working perfectly.  I have a couple of questions tho.  I dont seem to be getting ipv6 for some reason which is not a massive issue, although, i would like it, and secondly, when I tell the router to check for firmware updates, it tells me the update failed - every single time, so i'm guessing its the hubs way of telling me that there are no updates available?

I did have a go at setting up my tp-link VR2800, but I dont think its compatible with FTTP.  Set it all up, put in the deets vodafone gave me, chose the correct vlan ID and put it into the correct mode so it gets fed off the OR box, but it just doesnt want to connect.

No, IPv6 is not working on the Vodafone network yet. There are some work arounds involving Terado but as I don't need IPv6 I've not looked into them.

As for the router, the firmware check never works. The latest (AFAIK) appears to be 19.4.0551-3261103

The Tp-Link should definitely work on FTTP. As you are on Openreach just try leaving the VLAN blank. If it's still not working, I'd suspect the credentials Vodafone gave you.

If it has a setup wizard, probably best to use that.

Hope all continues to go well for you.

ah ok thanks.

As far at the ipv6 thing, my geekiness doesnt extend that far.  why wouldnt you need it?

Why would I? There are no IPv6 only sites I want to access, and no devices I own that are IPv6 only.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see it available, and it was when I was on Sky over 2 years ago, but I've never missed it since I came here.
