Solution

Firestick problems/losing connection

So upgraded to a fibre connection a few days ago, engineers came and completed the necessary; but ever since my Firestick won’t stay connected to the network (via Wi-Fi) for more than about 10-15 minutes.

Unplugging the Firestick from the mains, waiting a few seconds and then plugging in it again will restore the connection and allow me to watch it for a quarter of an hour until the cycle repeats.

TVs, computers, phones and tablets all connect and stay connected without a problem, it’s just the Firestick, and never had a problem like this with my previous TalkTalk router.

I notice this always appears in the router log the moment it loses connection.

12/12/2021	08:28:31	Probing device 68:[MAC address redacted]:99 IP address 192.168.1.110 on interface br-lan	lan
12/12/2021	08:28:31	Deleting STA from monitor [68:[MAC address redacted]:99]	data

Anyone know what that’s telling me or how to stop this?

Thanks for getting in touch @bushmaster80

You can give the following a try:

  • Try rebooting both the Fire Stick and router at the same time (even if the router is working fine with other devices).
  • Ensure that both your router and Fire Stick are running the latest software.
  • If not already doing so, use the HDMI extender that should have come with the Fire Stick; to see if this helps with interference. This will also let us know if it's just the Wi-Fi that's causing the problems.

Let us know if any of these help at all

Thanks for the reply. 😊

I’ve done the latter 2 suggestions but I’ll give point 1 a go.

Is that something to do with assigning IP addresses around the network?

Is there a way to force a device to use the other frequency with the Vodafone router?

I mean, it may not help but notice my Firestick always comes up under 5ghz; just wondered if that was worth trying too.

I never noted what settings the Firestick used with my TalkTalk router as I never had any issues.

Not if you are on Pro. If you are not Pro you can split the Wi-Fi bands and then select which one to connect to manually.

Hi

I am experiencing EXACTLY the same issue!  New fibre line and router installed on Thursday and have spent the whole weekend trying to get the situation resolved.  Online chats and three looooong phone calls have not resolved it. I am now trying to find out if an ethernet cable and ethernet adaptor is the only course of action. Sick of turning off and on, forgetting network and then reconnecting. There was no issue with my former provider (up until last Thursday when I moved provider) and this Vodafone experience  is disappointing at best, contract-terminating and very bad reviews at worst.  As I type, connection whilst watching Youtube has failed for third time in last 30 minutes.

Can you PLEASE let me know if you found a solution.

Vodafone, if you monitor these forums, can you PLEASE contact me asap with a guaranteed solution - not a reset and unsubstantiated promise all will be well "this time".

Thank you

Andy

Hi @Andy70

Unfortunately I never did find a solution to this, although after a few weeks it seemed to settle down and is no longer an issue. No idea what changed, frankly - certainly nothing I did.

It still does it very occasionally (about once every 2 or 3 of months) - I’ll be streaming something and the spinny ring will come up in the middle of the screen and I’ll remember what a pain in the backside it was, otherwise I’d have all but forgotten about it.

TIP: because resetting/starting my router and Firestick involves getting up (and I’m lazy), you can often get your Firestick to reconnect just by going to the network settings and selecting another Wi-Fi signal (you don’t need to know the password or anything, so just select a neighbours) and then cancel that and re-select yours and it more often than not sorts it out.

Not ideal, but only takes 30 seconds rather than 3 or 4 minutes.

For any streaming stick Wi-Fi problems, it is often worth getting a HDMI extension lead, and getting the stick positioned away from the back of the TV. That is a very hostile environment for Wi-Fi.
