So I've recently moved into new house, previous owners had sky (in case it's relevant). 2 dishes on side of house and bunch of cable and connections in living room.
Ordered broadband from Vodafone end of November, plugged eouter in prior to activation, howeber still getting red flashing internet light.
Took apart mastersocket and the below is the arrangement
Am I missing some wiring in there? Are the wires poking out the black cable at the top supoosed to me connected to anything?
Only phone I have access to is from work (panasonic kx-321 digital phone) doesn't receive dial tone.
Beneath the socket is:
which has now fallen to pieces leaving me with some odd thin cables.
Anybody like to care to share to help? Never knew a pair of twisted copper cables could prove so difficult to work!

The phone you've brought home from work will not function on an analogue (POTS) phone line, so you can't even use it to test the line! Have you considered asking a neighbour if you could borrow a phone for a couple of minutes just to test the line?
*regards the phone socket, make sure that it is indeed the master socket, and that there is not another socket hidden somewhere else in the house. We can't see your photos until they are approved, but commonly there will only be two wires attached to the socket!

It's Not Unusual...
3 pairs used to be common, in the days of ISDN, 1 pair was for control, another for pair 64 K and the final pair gave the full 128 K (K not M).
So you probably want/need just a single pair.
First power up the router and login using 192.168.1.1 preferably by ethernet, but Wi-F if you can and view the router. Done that, wait for White light from OpenReach cabinet.

Now your pictures have been moderated, I don't recognise the socket you have but the orange and white are usually the incoming pair, all the others are not used (which is why they are chopped off short).
They normally go to pins 2&5, but in some sockets go to A&B like yours. See here:

It may be a good idea to replace the socket with a filtered socket, but you aren't supposed to touch those sockets, it should be done by Openreach.
If you can get Vodafone to call out Openreach they will fit one for free (well they did for me) otherwise it will be a chargeable service (and you wouldn't want to pay their prices).
Many people do it themselves and as long as it's done neatly no one will know and as you have just moved in it could have been done at anytime in the past.
Just google "replace master socket" and there will be loads of info and YouTube videos.

Does a phone work in the socket but not broadband? (Edit just remembered you said you only have a digital phone, could you not borrow on from next door?)

Sorry for doing a post and run! What with work, Xmas, more work and other things going on been a little busy.
So, I can make and receive calls directly to the faceplate and with the microfilter installed....
Connecting the router using my phone takes me to a page 'activation please insert the mobile stick' with homepage, continue and cancel options.
Home and cancel allows me to login to the router with the password, continue thinks then reloads the page.
As a side note avast suggests the router is infected with malicious code.
Is that of any use to someone to suggest a way forward? Thanks

If you have the filter plugged into the master socket and the phone and router connected to their respective ports and the phone works but the router still flashed red, then, assuming no hardware fault with any of the equipment, it sounds like the broadband may not be enabled on your line.

That seems very strange, do you have Avast running on your phone? Whilst it's theoretically possible for a router to be infected with malicious code, it's highly unlikely especially as it's not yet been connected to the internet.

Only thing I haven't tired is a different filter to router cable - these are RJ11 to RJ11? (one of the few I don't have a spare of, plenty of cat5 knocking around)
Guess this is a call to VF customer services to check if this has been enabled?
Use avast on both my mobile & computer at home, never had a problem so far! I assumed it would be a false positive, but you never know.

You have downloaded and installed VF apps from internet?
If so which ones, and from where (Old versions do seem to flag up a warning).

You have downloaded and installed VF apps from internet? No, only used the wifi connection on the mobile to connect to & log into the router. Avast on my mobile scans new wifi coonections as a matter of course (phone also used for work)
