I used to get 5ms ping to London (from Coventry), now I am being auto connected to Edinburugh and I get 15 ping to there, when I try to speedtest to London or even right next to me in Leicester I am getting pings above 22...I called in and they just said "they added new servers and there's nothing much we can do"...

any help?

A. Which of the IP addresses on your trace route are CityFibre specific?

B. The IP addresses are somewhat bizarre. regarding ownership and location.  This is the order.

1, 63.130.105.134 - Vodafone - Chicago (Not really Chicago, but somewhere in the UK.) This is a very odd gateway.

2. 90.255.251.2 - Vodafone Alverchurch  (  approximate location residential IP)

3. 72.14.216.236 - Google-USA (probably not USA)

4. 90.255.251.2 - Vodafone Alverchurch  (  approximate location residential IP)   This is bizarre! The same IP twice?!

5. 8.8.8.8 -Target, Google, USA (Probably not USA)

C.  Something is not right here. This is clearly NOT a CityFibre issue, but to do with routing. What I don't understand is why your route goes through the same  residential Vodafone ip (Alverchurch?) twice. Perhaps someone here can explain.. I did a tracert on 90.255.251.2 . After my Birmingham gateway everything else timed out up to 32 hops.

This really is a weird one.

90.255.251.2 identifies as a major gateway - BIGFELLA_P11C-SOUTH.

It must be made up. No-one's traceroute goes gateway-gateway-google-gateway-[destination]

This is my IP [Removed]

I'm using 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server (Vodafones is too slow). However, if I remove this I still get high pings.

I'd rather have slow speeds and low pings.

Any help is appreciated.

@Ripshod  "It must be made up"  I'm glad you said it and not me. Is someone is trying to take us for a ride?

@purrbox For your own security you  need to remove your IP address  from public view in this forum immediately.

Besides that, your traceroute does not appear possible. You don't get to go through your main network gateway twice.  If your  traceroute is genuine, you need to get onto VF about it.

I've already changed my IP since posting.

I've contacted Vodafone again who have said their 3rd line support will send the latest trace routes to city fibre.

@purrbox   Your private IP address is still there.  How do you change your IP just like that? Vodafone change your IP when they choose. Have you made a special request since you posted it yesterday? Well done for getting CS out of normal office hours and avoiding the usual one hour wait to get through. 🙄

Vodafone do the routing.

@Ripshod @Anonymous I think it's possible that the route it was trying to take was down so it backtracked and tried a different route.

Either way the main thing that debunks it being a CityFibre issue in this scenario is that a router reboot / gateway reassignment can solves the issue which makes it seem like it's a load balancing issue on Vodafone's part unless certain routes are just heavily congested and need more networking bandwidth / infrastructure (?) I guess it's possible 🤷🏾‍♂️

It would be strange that no-one at Vodafone has confirmed this here or to other users that have contacted them. I agree that something does seem a bit off about this, and someone along the chain might be making at least some stuff up

@Anonymous I just disconnected and reconnected. Each time I do this I get a different IP.

However, no matter how many times I try, it's always routed via Manchester.

Don't call at this time. It backfired and I got the foreign call center, 15 minutes just trying to give them my account details and then they couldn't find my account.

Will try again later.

I think I'm actually routed back through Edinburgh even though I'm in Leeds as the ping to Manchester is up at 20ms yet to Edinburgh its 7
