Solution

Replacing VF router with Asus DSL-AX82U to use in modem mode for DUAL WAN purposes

HI,

I live in the UK. I have a technical question about routers pls.

This is my setup:

Virgin Media 1GB Connection -> Connected to my Asus AX11000 router via 2.5G port

Vodafone DSL 70MB Connection -> Connected to my Asus AX11000 router via 1GB Port

I have 2 internet connections. Virgin is Fibre and Vodafone is DSL.

I want to use DUAL WAN with FAILOVER mode so that if my Virgin connection is lost, Vodafone connection will take over.

The issue is that the Vodafone Router cannot be put in Modem Mode, which creates issue with the DUAL WAN.

So I bought the ASUS DSL-AX82U router to replace the ISP-owned Vodafone router.

(Vodafone have already provided me with my PPPoe username/password)

QUESTION: In which mode should I put the DSL router to make all of this work please?

The final config should be:

DSL VF Wall socket -> DSL port on AX82U -> Ethernet cable to AX11000's 1GB port

Fibre VM Wall socket -> Virgin Router (in modem mode) -> Ethernet cable to AX11000's 2.5 GB port

Thanks a lot

I don't believe you can put the RT-AX82u into modem mode either!  If you are determined to do this you either want an actual VDSL2 modem or a modem/router with a modem-only mode.  A lot may depend on what you are doing on the internet; if it's not gaming then one of the xyzel VDSL2 modem routers you can find for a steal on Ebay may be your best bet.  The problem with these is that they often buffer everything, leading to horrendous "buffer bloat" that makes games unplayable.

The DSL-AX88U may actually have the modem or bridge mode. Either would do the job, but really all that was needed was the modem that @CrimsonLiar has suggested, or even a Huawei hg612.

Yes you are correct, this is an overkill, but if/when I don't need it as a DSL modem anymore, I'll be able to use it as an AIMesh as my other router is also an Asus since this router can do both, DSL and cable.
I'll receive it tomorrow and will try the bridge mode

It would be so simpler if the vodafone router had a modem mode like the VM ones do!

Sorry one more question if you don't mind:
On the secondary router, should the ethernet cable that goes to the main router be plugged into the WAN port or any of the yellow ethernet ports? thnx

Well, it's not really a secondary router, as it's the primary one on the DSL, but yes, a LAN port. The WAN is for an incoming ethernet connection.

thnx

Actually, thinking about it you will really only be using it as a modem, rather than a router, but still the LAN port.
