Using ASUS RT AX11000 as main router on Gigafast 900

Hi,

I have Vodafone/Gigafast 900 running nicely get a nicely symmetrical 930Mb or better and low ping <8ms. However, I want other router features that Vodafone's router doesn't provide.

I have connected my AX11000 WAN port direct to the ONT box by CAT5e cable  I have applied my user name and password using PPPoE and have checked this is correct. In VLAN I have used 911 for the ID as recommended on forums. I know that my router is detecting that the internet is there because when I did type in the password wrongly, the set up told me I had got it wrong.  At the moment I can't think what I am doing wrong.  Help please.

Only some users need to use a VLAN ID, so to start with, try removing it!

Thanks for the suggestion, but no cigar.

Here was me thinking I could connect using my own router and then having achieve that, experiment with using a switch connected to the ONT box so that I could keep my landline alive through the VF router whilsts using my own router for the broadband.  Fat chance! I can't even connect directly linked to the ONT box!

On the grounds that it has to be something silly that's causing the problem:  Have you tried a different ethernet cable, and double-checked that the cable is plugged into the WAN port and not the Gaming port (why do they place these the wrong way around)?

You are right to ask these things. I'm using a Cat6 patch cable that I know has  no faults. Yes, I have the patch cable going directly from the ONT box to the WAN port and just to be certain I have Dual WAN disabled. I have also carried out soft and hard reboots  and repeated the setup process repeatedly.

The only other possibility, given that this is a new account, is that the order is not fully complete and so my user name and password are not properly in the database. I have chatted online to that effect and am assured that it was  properly registered.  mmm Vodafone customer services? Do I trust them?

If the order weren't complete then the Vodafone router wouldn't work either!

This slightly confuses me. If it complains that the password is wrong (when it is), but doesn't complain when you have the correct one, it seems to be that the router must be authenticating to Vodafone, so why doesn't it work?

Does it actually get an IP address?

That is the confusing thing. No IP.

*was going to post an example image, but it's irrelevant as you'll be using the ROG WEBUI, while my GT-AX6000 used the standard asus-wrt with Merlin WEBUI.

Problem solved. Fortunately, VF already gave me a static IP on my request, so instead of having WAN IP detected automatically I have set it the IP manually.  This seems to have done the trick. Thanks for your suggestions.

When you started to talk about detecting the IP,  that got me thinking.

I will now try my next step - to run the VF router, but with WiFi switched off, using a witch between the ONT box and its WAN port. If this works I can get the telephone line back. This means I will have to connect my AX11000 the same way.  Crossing fingers!

EDIT:  All attempts to run the VF and AX11000 through a switch connected to the ONT box have failed. Both devices are happy to be connected via the switch, but not both at the same time. The VF assumes priority in this setup, allowing broadband and telephone, but the AX 11000 declares that the internet cable is unplugged.

My next step is to get a VoIP adapter  (£20) in the hope that this will work through the AX11000.
