Aberdeen - dreadful speeds tonight - line congestion?

On CityFibre 900 and speeds are near unusable. Switched to the mobile dongle and they were even worse.

What is going on?

Easier said than done. I've spent hours with these clowns and they refuse to raise a ticket no matter what I try. They insist Id have to pay for months of the contract to end it early despite them delivering 3mbit/s at the only time of the day we need an internet connection that works.

They still claim there is <no speed guarantee> and that its a router problem or a wifi problem or really anything other than an obvious vodafone network issue.

Also weird there are now 24 pages of this thread concentrated on persistent issues in the same geographic area and not a single peep from anyone from vodafone.

Oh Ran the test thing online that was posted, Vodafone, it ran for like 5 seconds and came back "no problems found", Which is strange as this problem only seems to happen between 6pm-12

Just ran an speedtest, and got 938up 940 down 13:10 28/10/24 ill post tonights results

I ran the online test that was posted for Vodafone. It ran for about 5 seconds and came back with 'no problems found,' which is odd because this issue only seems to occur between 6 pm and 12 am.

Just did a speed test and got 938 Mbps up and 940 Mbps down at 1:10 pm on 28/10/24. I'll post tonight's results.

Fast.com:
- Download: 970 Mbps

Virgin Media Speed Checker:
- Latency: 20.0 ms
- Jitter: 1.28 ms
- Download: 938 Mbps
- Upload: 940 Mbps

Broadband Speed Checker:
- Latency: 38 ms
- Download: 890.03 Mbps
- Upload: 895.22 Mbps

Speedtest (Cloudflare):
- Download: 860 Mbps (90th percentile)
- Upload: 631 Mbps (90th percentile)
- Latency: 19.7 ms (min), 49.6 ms (median), 197 ms (max)
- Jitter: 395 μs (min), 15.9 ms (median), 72.5 ms (max)"

@Annoyeduser71  What speed does the router think that the line is operating at?

@Annoyeduser71  That'll be the reason why VF's test didn't find anything. The router is reporting 1Gbps.

It's a con as they use that as a way of saying there are no issues.

Well yes that's the connection speed but it's largely irrelevant.

In my case the line speed is between 930 and 1000 mbit/s when I try their tool to test bandwidth from cityfibre to the ONT. The problem is getting a connection from vodafones network to the rest of the internet.

I know its weird for customers to pay an ISP for access to the internet rather than their local network infrastructure in the basement of some telecom, but apparently thats how vodafone operates.

Note that speedtests to the speedtest servers provided by vodafone in edinburgh (ones where the traffic has to go on a very short hop over the actual internet) are affected just as described and results of 3mbit/s are common for about 8 hours a day, every single day for weeks now.

Well that's me clear of Vodafone. Finally got out of the contract early but it's a tiresome process dealing with Indian customer support. Went live with Zen this morning and all good so far. I called zen and explained what was happening with VF and they said that VF have taken on too many customers for their allocated bandwidth hence it coming to a halt in the evenings. They specifically stated that Zen won't sell too many connections for the allocated bandwidth in a partucular cabinet. Good luck to everyone else trying to get free of this terrible company.
