On CityFibre 900 and speeds are near unusable. Switched to the mobile dongle and they were even worse.
What is going on?

Same thing here. On Friday 6th August at around 1:30am my internet disconnected for about 5 minutes, then at around 10:45am latency suddenly dropped to about 14ms (an improvement on the 23ms I've been getting), then on the evening of Saturday 7th August the connection was perfect, speed 900M+ no packet loss, great I thought it's been fixed, but no, on Sunday it all went pear shaped again, speed down to 200Mb (it has been worse) and packet loss of 20%. I phoned Vodafone today and complained, again, and they said nothing wrong with connection, well not just now there's not but in the evening it's abysmal. "We'll phone back in the evening and check again." says Vodafone,. So let's see what happens this evening. This is Vodafone's last go at fixing this fault (I've reported it twice before and it was fixed, for a while, then broke again). As there's less than 3 months left on my contract Vodafone say it will cost £41 to end it early (just about 1 months cost), so it's off to Zen within the week if Vodafone don't fix it this time.

Bridge of Don (Aberdeen) internet speeds have been terrible for a couple of weeks, and I suspect traffic shaping. The slowdown mainly occurs between 17:00 and 00:00. When I use a VPN, like one routing through Amsterdam, I get around 800 Mbps down and 900 Mbps up, but the latency increases, which is a problem since I play a lot of online games. Without the VPN, I sometimes struggle to get even 10 Mbps, sometimes as low as 3, which is only about 3 percent of the advertised speed. I don’t want to deal with customer support because it's such a frustrating process.

I just ran www.vodafone.co.uk/broadbandservicetest and it actually confirmed the line is totally goosed, and automatically created me a ticket with support. Give it a go!
I noticed a VPN fixes the speed issue, but doesn't address the huge packet loss, so there's more going on than just bad routing. They have confirmed lots of times that they absolutely don't do traffic shaping, I think it's just bad routing and the VPN gives you an alternative route.

It's worked fine at raising tickets for me each time I've used it.
08-09-2024 09:11 PM
Did they ever get in touch with you as a result of the tickets it creates?
08-09-2024 09:24 PM
Yes, that's why I say it's worked fine. Normally get a call the day after doing it.
I don't remember for sure but the first time I had these problems I think I went through the phone call palaver with customer services, but now it seems that tickets through the checker go direct to tier 2 support.
Incidentally connection is so rubbish just now that I had to reload this page multiple times before it would actually open a reply box...

Yeah me too, the service test crapped out a few times too because the connection was too bad to run the tests, needed a few goes.
Did you get anywhere with tier 2 support? Hopefully they are getting spammed with similar tickets.
My Dad is still sitting round the corner absolutely fine at full speed, it's so so weird.

Yes. Had a call Thursday afternoon "we need to send cityfibre engineers on Saturday" despite my arguing that the line was fine evidenced by speeds OK outside of evening hours, and upload speed always being OK.
20 mins later CF engineer called, am I home, we'll be there in 15 mins... Came in, tested line, agreed that it wasn't a line fault, reckoned they were doing this 10-15 times a week for vodafone!
Later that day ticket updated "we've fixed your line", been fine until this morning. With that blip in the wee small hours where something was changed over that massively improved ping and upload speed variance.
Photo is 7 days worth of ping to speedtest servers

Aha... maybe just rinse-repeat, and CityFibre might eventually get hacked off at the constant fruitless callouts and cause Vodafone to look inwards instead. I'll try to go down this avenue too!
btw pictures take a looooong time to get moderated, I probably won't get to see them until the convo has already moved on, it sucks
