Solution

I have FTTP and my new VOIP phone is connected to my router, but it does not work well.

Can I connect my VOIP phone direct to the Openreach hub (where the FTTP line enters the house), either with or without  an adapter?  My Openreach hub is on my outside wall and the router is about 5 metres from it,  whilst the telephone is less than 1 metre from the Openreach hub, and it seems sensible to connect direct to the hub (1m) rather than by ethernet cable to the router and and back by telephone cable from the router through and adapter to the telephone (10m).

First question, do you actually have a VoIP phone? (I assume you don't)

If by the Openreach hub you mean the ONT, no you can't connect anything other than the router to it.

I believe it is a VoIP phone, I thought it was sold as such.  "Alcatel F860 Voice Trio - Cordless Phone with answering machine and 3 Handsets - Landline Home Phone...".

I am not sure what you mean by ONT - It is a small hub with four lights across the top 'Power', 'LOS', 'PON' and 'LAN' and a message that if I move I should leave it behind.  It has 'Overreach' on it together with a Serial number and bar under the serial number.

The box on the wall with four lights is the ONT. Never plug anything but the router into it.

The phone you linked is a standard DECT phone, which should plug into TEL1 or TEL2 on the back of the vodafone router via an adapter (which should have been supplied by vodafone).

Thank you for clearing up the main matter.  Do not plug anything else into the ONT.  As far was the second matter is concerned I get terrible noises  and can no longer sensibly use my phone but instead my mobiles.  I will have try to find a VoIP phone.  Thanks for your help.

If you get a voip phone you won't be able to use it with your digital voice service without using a third party router. Only a select few Grandstream devices will work in this scenario.

You mention noise? Digital voice should never have any noise. Are you using the vodafone adapter to connect your phone to the router? It's also possible you have a faulty router.

Yes, do not get VoIP phone, your DECT phone will be perfect. If it's not working properly, there is a fault or it's not connected correctly.

Thank you for all your help.  I think the problem lies between the router and telephone, rather than the ONT and the router, so I will get back to Vodafone to check it out.  Thanks for all your help, you have been brilliant.

I don't think you will get much help from Vodafone for phone problems with digital voice, do let us know how it goes when you try.

If you are still having the problem after, just how are you connecting the DECT base station to the router?
