I have been through difficulties until this problem was finally solved. I have been missed around by chat customer service, and only second level xpert could guide me correctly.
To cut short, you need:
-Analog (standard) landline phone that can be connected to the VF router. Not every landline works ! What i know that BT090630 and Panasonic KXTGJ320EB would work.
- VOIP phone would never work.
- RJ11 internet cable that came with the router or the cable came with your landline phone. Ethernet cable would never work.
- If your landline phone inlet port is rectangular, different from square head of the cable, you need a cheap adaptor to receive the square cable end and give a rectangular end suitable for your landline phone inlet port.
- connect one end of the cable to Phone 1 or phone 2 green outlet at the back of the router. The other end of the cable in your landline phone.
- the phone indicator in the router front panel should be led white contineously. If not , it means the service is not set from VF side and you should contact them first to solve this problem.
- The openreach wall box ( ONT) has nothing to do with the landline connection.
I hope i could help.

Can you run your own router from the VF router (set to bridge mode) and still have the landline attached to the VF router and it work?

The Vodafone THG3000 doesn't have a modem only/bridge mode, so you would be running one router behind another. It would work, but you would be running with double NAT.
If the second router has access point mode that would work, but obviously none of the advanced functions of the second router would work.
