I have a relative that having colossal problems with Digital Voice. She's been without a phone for 2 weeks since you upgraded her line. She's been told to buy a VOIP phone but has had no other help. Question is a) is this true does she need a VOIP phone and if so what phones work with Vodafone Digital Voice, and b) if this is not true what phones will work with her router. She's been sent adapters but she's been told her original phone is too old for them to work.

If you don't have the adapter this is the one we recommend:

If she's using the supplied vodafone router then any normal phone would work well along with the adapter vodafone should have provided. If there's no adapter @Jayach has a handy link for one on amazon, less than a fiver.
If she's using her own 3rd party router then she will indeed need a voip phone or ATA from the Grandstream range, along with all her voip details from vodafone and the rigmarole of setting it up.

It's a Vodafone router, and it's the Vodafone help desk has told her that the phone is too old. She's got a new basic phone coming today. Is the adapter just a bog standard RJ11 to RJ25? Or is it something special?

The adapter is RJ11 plug to BT socket. It should have been in the box the router came in.

I hadn't looked carefully at the Amazon link recently, but it has this picture:
They are connecting a phone into the DSL socket on a filtered faceplate. What on earth is that about?

That's a good ole mk4 faceplate, phone on the right, combined RJ11/RJ45 on the left.
Not the intended use for this adapter.

Think she had a duff one given to her, she's got one coming to her from Vodafone. I've found a few on Amazon I'm sending her.

Brilliant, that's the one I've just got sent to her, thank you very much!

To add to the replies from @Ripshod I honestly don't think any phone is too old to work on the Vodafone router's TEL sockets.
Unless it's one of these:
