Then can you tell me why I've been told it isn't? I've rung to try and sort things out, done configurations, been told they've tried to ring but nothing happens, I was told it is reaching the the hub but not the phone, a friend who is an openreach employee said it's more like it hasn't been turned on, it is all connected up, wired, properly but phone just isn't working.

If the phone led is lit on the router then it sounds like you're missing the telephone adapter that vodafone should have sent you.
Rather than waste loads of your own time trying to get them to send you one you could just buy one online. This is the one we recommend:

Is it possible you are just not hearing the phone ringing? Only certain methods of connecting the phone include the necessary ring capacitor.

There's no dialing sound or anything, it's dead, can't make outgoing calls either

yes it's lit on the hub and connected to the router with the internet wire that came with it, engineer set it up, VF said the phone is not compatible and to get another, I'm not made of money and an openreach employee we know has said if it plugs into hub then it is compatible, quite likely they have turned it on but was told by agent that several attempts had been made to ring, the wire plugs into back of phone then green phone port on back of hub

O.K. I suspect the cable is the problem, some phones use a different pair of pins at the phone end. Did you remove the original BT type cable to be able to use the internet cable?
If you remove the cable at the phone end you may be able to see that it uses a different pair to the cable (the cable uses the centre 2 pins)
Refit the phone's original cable and use a adapter like the one @Ripshod linked to, or tell Vodafone you need the "VoIP connector" as Vodafone call it. They should already have supplied one, but for some reason they don't always.
Edit: Did you follow the setup guide? Getting started | Broadband | Vodafone

No point using an adapter when the old copper box has been disconnected as this is not going to solve the problem.
