PIN number for mobile broadband

When I insert the dongle and find it on the list of broadband providers it askes for a PIN/security code/password (sorry if got that technical bit wrong - not got the laptop open atm),  is this sent through the post or when registering did I in the dim and distant past enter a code. Please can anyone help
