@B-12345 and @BandOfBrothers - would you mind if I moved the discussion about devices to the Lounge?  That way it doesn't detract from the MK9 issues?

Its not an issue - I can move the posts to another area.  That way you guys can keep the conversation going and hopefully get a bit more input from more people.

Discussing devices is always good -  you get so many different ideas and opinions.

So from my list of phones I've used Id like to mention the Nokia Lumia 1020.

It was the first time in a number years that I have used a Nokia Mobile Phone due to losing confidence in how Nokia was evolving with its hardware and software. I did own the Nokia N900 which one of the first open source phones and the Nokia N8.

And how I soon reasoned how Nokia have changed…. for the better in my opinion.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Operating System.

Windows Phone 8 is the OS on the Nokia Lumia 1020, and as I have not used a Windows Phone before, it was very unfamiliar to me, and refreshing at the same time, but after persevering with the OS I soon got on with this platform, and really like it.

The 'live tile' system operates buttery smooth to provide the owner with updates on Weather and Social Sites, and any other useful info you might need and want to view. The live tiles are also customisable in size, which is a very nice touch. You can make them larger or smaller, and you can arrange them into clusters when you reduce them down.
It did take a little time to get used to the tiles updating on the screen as i'm more used to a static screen.

Whilst using the phone I did not experience any lag or stutter while using the phone.

Design and Features.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes in three colours which are Yellow, Black and White, each with a matte finish, and with a coating that’s purported to both be fingerprint- and dirt-resistant.

My preference would be the Black option.

The quality of design is solid and with polycarbonate being used for its body, and various buttons such as the volume rocker button offering a tactile feel responsive, although I did find the volume kept being turned down from pressure on the rocker switch while it was in my pocket.

The corners do feel sharpish as you move your hand across the phone and as the camera is rather large if feels a little top heavy and un-balanced in the hand. Also due to the camera nodule sticking out it will not lay on a flat surface, and rocks when trying to use the handset.

The Lumia 1020 display is a 1,280 x 768 pixel AMOLED screen with corning gorilla glass 3 protection, that provided ample clarity in all conditions. The Contrast is adequate and the colour reproduction is good too. The fonts are just the right size and very clear and crisp.

In my opinion the Nokia Lumia 1020 did not live up to the Retina screen I use on my iPhones.

The music functions have a long list of features and much can be achieved and found it to be an acceptable user experience whilst commuting.

Outbound calls and inbound calls were crystal clear. The loud speaker had the same clarity.
The audible alerts for incoming calls and notifications were loud.

General Usage.

The handset provided me with full network signal and 3G and 4G.

The keyboard is well spaced out for text message composing and sending e mails although the process of moving the cursor back into a paragraph is a pain to use as it jumps all over the screen.
Surfing the Internet on the 1020 provided a buttery smooth experience and I didn't feel any lag or crashes. The phone had no problems dealing with the games.

Now for the best known feature of this phone The Camera.

The rear of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the most noticeable with its very large camera module, Xenon flash, LED light and camera lens. The spec is 41mp with 38mb effective.I was not sure I liked this nodule and I found this protrusion to cause me handling issues. Unfortunately I found myself handling it and having to think about where to place my fingers around the phone.

{More details ref specs/prices can be found on Nokia Homepage}

So The Good.

Excellent awesome Camera.
Slim down design and very very solid build quality.
Good battery life.
Vibrant Screen.

The Not so Good for me.

Sadly No expandable memory SD Slot.
Windows app’s and the games selection is a little light on the ground.
Native Mail App restrictive.
I found it to be Un-balanced and top heavy.
Curser not easy to navigate with.
You Cannot lay it on a flat surface to use.

My Conclusion.

I was happy with how Nokia had moved on from the earlier versions I used many years ago which is positive.

This led me to buy the Nokia Lumia 520.

How did you find the S4 compared to the 5?

I've used the S3, S4 and S5.  TBH, they are basically evolutionary upgrades on the previous version of the handset.

I didn't find that there was a huge difference betweent the S4 and S5, they were more similar than dissimilar.  The key difference is the battery as bandofbrothers1 has said - 200mAh does make a difference.  The other slight difference is the back of the device.  The S5 has a soft touch back that feels marginally more premium than the S4.

I've just upgraded to the S6 Edge and that is a change in many ways from Samsung's normal style.  It feels a heck of a lot more premium, and despite having a lower capacity than the S5, the battery life is actually a lot better.  Have either of you had a play with the S6 or S6 Edge yet?

Hi

I Have Been in to my HighStreet stores to use the working demo models but have not had the pleasure of road testing it properly. I have spoken to others on forums who say one issue they have had is how reflective the screen is outdoors causing issue with sometimes being able to view the screen. They think it may have something to do with how the screen curves.

I can't say I have really noticed that much of an issue.  Turning up the brightness slightly or leaving the phone on auto seems to work okay for me.  The cool this is you also tweak the auto brightness setting to give you a bit more of a boost if needed.

Hi drey_p

That's good news to hear.

As I said I've only used the phone while in the high street stores so couldn't really test out what some other users I'd spoken to had reported on regarding the screen not being easy to view in outdoor conditions.

Personally I think the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is amazing device both with its included features, build quality and is aesthetically pleasing.

May just treat myself down the line 😉
