no more Twitter SMSs

As from yesterday Voda UK are no longer supporting Twitter sms messaging . I have spoken to Voda live chat and to a rep on the phone but they didn't even know about it. This must be affecting 100s if not 1000s of us. Perhaps if we all complain we can get the decision reversed. I for one will be leaving Voda over it ( as long as the other providers don't follow suit ).

Woooaaa!  I said "marginal" cost.

Although evidence that despite all the investment in systems and licences (if not customer support services) has not delivered entirely satisfied customers, is not hard to find on the web.

As an accountant and financial director I fully understand marginal cost and it makes no difference to the argument.

Ah, that probably explains it. Bean counters may not appreciate the potential marketing value of any progressive contact with a user ... and the opportunity this provides to get them deeper embroiled into the world of mobile communications when the cost is "negligible".

And marketeers always want to give it away for nothing and damn the consequences. In the case of mobile telecoms it all works around a statistic called ARPU - average revenue per user - and that has a direct bearing on the cost of capital, the ability to borrow funds on the capital markets and invest further in network infrastructure. Allowing a totally separate commercial operation to obtain a free service has damaging implications that far outweigh any potential 'marginal' marketing benefit that might accrue as it would dilute ARPU. That's why one of this country's largest and most successful corporations has done what I have said is the right thing.
