3rd party router on Gigafast in Milton Keynes

ctmkuk
4: Newbie

Hi. I have a fast, working gigafast connection using the supplied VF router. However, it is missing some functionality that I require for home users, eg DNS settings via DHCP server, plus a load of stuff I can't do for work, such as vlans.

I have tried to configure my old Draytek 2950n which has a wan side connection via ethernet. Plugged it into CPE, entered the PPOE username and password. But getting 'no response from server'. Have tried vlan 101 and 2000 but same result. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

Hey @markeagles4, I'm glad you managed to get the information you were after. :Smiling:

Maybe a little premature, a sticky on what routers (3rd party) are tried and tested to be working by the comunity and how to confugure them, just as a ref to new gigafast users that are lookng to use a router other than the supplied VF hadware.

I know alot of people that really don't like isp provided hardware like me i would always go for another option, wether it be security or raw wifi power or any other reason.

Regards

Mark

Cisco 5506-X model works as a third party router. I am using it.

I always get a 3rd party router too.

I got a netgear nighthawk ar500

Linksys EA9500

  • I have been unable so far as to get my netgear d7000 to connect. Would you mind sharing setup details including physical. Incase I am missing something please?

What settings are you currently using on the D7000? Any logs / error messages?

Also have you enable / set VLAN to 911?

Well I have entered my pppoe user name and password and changed the vlanid

to 911. I am not sure if there are other setting that i need to change.

Not familiar with the D7000, but there shouldn't be much to setup:

- Physical connect to the Internet/ WAN port (think its usually red on Netgear routers)

- set IP and DNS to assigned by ISP

- enter username and password

- set VLAn to 911 (IPTV sub menu on Netgears if memory serves me correctly)

Thank you for your input. I have followed these steps and no joy I am afraid. Keep getting a message suggesting that no cable is attached.  I assume ethernet from the wee black ont box to the wan port on the router is correct
