500 Mb or 900 Mb fibre BB install Questions

Hi,

Questions around physical install of this service, currently I have  a bb copper connection form the pole so the cable come from the pole and terminate on the outside of my house in a junction box which also has a cat6 cable running from that junction box through my house above my living room to under the stairs where the router is.

I have spoken to Vodafone who advise me the ONT will probably be installed on the other side of that wall where the junction box is (internally) and then router will need to connect to ONT.

The problem I have is the router need to be under the stairs so I need the current Cat6 which is connected to the external junction box to now terminate inside the house.

Two issues will the BT engineer re-terminating this Cat6 for me to the ONT which will involve feeding this Cat6 cable back into the house. Although initially when Openreach installed the Cat6 for my current service they did not leave much slack; only enough to terminate to outside junction. So if I wanted them to re-terminate that Cat6 inside the house I would require some sort of coupler so I can extend the current Cat6.

So this is my own ideas around the install but I have asked Vodafone can I speak to someone technical to discuss the install and they said I will need to order and discuss with engineer once he turns up onsite? Is that right? Surely I can speak to someone technical rather than order the BB service then wait weeks to be either told we can do this or cannot do it?

This really sounds like a bit of a weird one!  So what broadband plan package/provider are you moving from - and I guess was this a trial area/forced move?

Reterminating Cat6 cables is a breeze.  Basically extending cables is not too hard (3 common ways), but getting that cable "neatly" to your preferred location may be more than the basic/common install.

Currently Vodafone bb 70Mb service, initially when I move in the area they didn't have an fibre service to provide me, only during lockdown the infra was upgraded and I can now take fibre from the pole form Vodafone.

So the Cat6 is chased down the wall(internally) and pops out the external wall where it meets the copper from the pole within the grey junction box. That Cat6 is not visible inside the house..

So what are the common ways you know of? And any idea if the engineer will help with this?

I'm confused as to why you would have a CAT 6 Ethernet cable running from the Openreach external box into your house. What is it being used for?

Edit: Vodafone won't be able to advise you on the physical installation, that is up to Openreach.

If the CAT6 is chased down the inside of the wall before going outside then surely pulling it back through to inside will leave enough of a tail to terminate in the ONT?

The Cat6 goes to my my router which is under the stairs located centrally in the house. So from that location it goes up into the ceiling through the floor joist and then down the living wall(the other side of this wall is the external junction box) room where it has been chased(inside of wall) then a hole was drilled and the cat6 run through the hole.

After the whole house was plastered etc so that cable is no longer visible internally within the house. The cable is only visible form the outside.

Here is a pic hopefully it will help, open to any suggestions..

I have attached a pic hopefully it will help, I kind of assumed looking at this pic that there is not enough slack to pull this back through the brick work, I don't really want to break the internal plaster to loosen the slack IMG-20220903-WA0008.jpgetc..

I most desperately hope that this ethernet cable is inside a duct or conduit, or you're going to have a rotten time replacing it when it eventually fails.

Related to the above, as you won't want to run a visible lan cable around I have a few alternatives.

  • Fibre optic. Using a media converter at each end you can make the connection with a fine fibre around the skirtings/doorways. Can be painted over to hide it.
  • Flat lan cable. This can be tucked in under the carpet edge and under any carpet strips for stealth. I suggest the flat because it's less likely to get damaged where carpet strips are stepped on.
  • Power line adapters. As long as your wiring is is good condition these may work for you.

Cat6 coming in from the pole still sounds to me like one of the "Hub" trials that Openreach had running.  If it was a trial, then the old Cat6 coming in could be removed and the hole used for the fibre entry point.  I'd also suggest that it could be an arguing point enabling the OP to blag to get the fitting where they want!

Sorry I wasn't clear the black cable coming into the junction box is the cable from the pole. The purple cable is the cable that terminate under the stairs as a master socket and the router connects to that master socket.

Basically I want to reroute the purple cable back into the house on the other side of the wall where the ONT will be...

Should I just book order the service and wait till a OR engineer tell me if this is possible, just wanted to know if Voda had some sort of team that could answer these questions prior to me ordering the service..
