DNS on Vodafone Power Hub not changing despite changing in Expert Mode

Hi,

I recently switched to Vodafone from TalkTalk. I have the Power Hub. I've been mostly happy, but I cannot change the network-wide DNS to my local AdGuard instance on my home server. I can successfully change the setting in Expert Mode (Under Wi-Fi → DNS & DDNS) but all clients still say the router IP, and the DNS change does not work (my local domains for selfhosted applications do not work). I've tried power cycling all devices, forgetting network etc. No luck. If I manually set the DNS in my client Wi-Fi settings (i.e my MacBook, or PC) then DNS works how I would like it to.

I don't know why it won't work on the router. See attached photo of settings.

Frankly this has been very frustrating. Any advice is appreciated.

Hey bud, i see you havnt had any replies from anyone.

How you getting on ?  Fixed it yet ?

So when you changed each client machine to use the same DNS you wanted on your router, it worked you say ?
Meaning, each machine would of required an individual IP address, like a manual static IP address.
Plus each machine would need the correct gateway address, directed to the router.

Your local domain didnt work you say ?  Do you mean your PC connected to the LAN wouldnt work either ?

Set local domain with a static IP, and gateway to router.
Same as each client machine. Set each device, with it's own static IP and gateway address.

From my experience, DHCP isnt very good for this. Dont rely on it.
You cant set a DNS without giving each machine their own IP.

If i'm way off point, i do apologise.
Hope you managed to get it sorted. 🙂

No one answered because the query showed a complete lack of knowledge on how DHCP works. Trying to correct the misunderstanding was never going to work.

Well, no harm in trying, but you could be onto something ! 🙂
Some questions are like encrypted, right from the beginning hehe.
I got bored of Solitaire, so i thought id come on here.

There's no need to be belittling. I'm more than happy to learn - I am aware of DHCP and it's function but not going to pretend I'm an expert in it's management. Even on first-time connected devices after changing the router DNS settings or if I renew the DHCP lease on my MBP the issue still persists. On all previous routers (3 across different providers) simply changing the DNS has always worked before after renewing DHCP leases. I have found others online with this issue with the Power Hub not changing DNS properly.

That said, I'm not even sure DHCP is relevant here. According to some other posts on here, the router IP may still appear on the client-side DNS settings but query the AdGuard instance on the router level. Even if this is the case, my DNS sinkhole and custom domains do not work unless I manually change DNS settings client-side to query AdGuard and not the router.

At this point, I think I'm just going to manage DHCP myself through AdGuard to manually ensure AdGuard is used for DNS or just replace the power hub with a OpenWRT/OPNSense-enabled router.

I would appreciate any help, since you obviously have some knowledge, but I do not appreciate being implictly called stupid. Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that, I probably should have phrased my comment better.

If you are using the Vodafone routers to provide the IP address to your local LAN, they will provide their address as the DNS server.

The DNS settings in the routers (they all seem to work the same) are to tell the router where to get it's DNS resolutions from, those setting will not be passed to the LAN clients.

If that is not they way you want it to work, you will need to disable DHCP in the router and run it on another device, presumably your AdGuard/home server, as you suggest.

At least that's how I believe it to work, I'm actually no expert myself.
