Solution

Difficulty setting up my own modem and router

Hi

Following guidance on a number of other posts on here I've set about trying to replace my Vodafone router with an old Openreach modem and a new Linksys MR8300 Mesh Router. I am on a FTTC setup.

To start I just disabled the wifi on the Vodafone Hub and ran the Linksys in bridge mode, but then I can't add extra nodes so that isn't ideal. That's when I dug out the old ECI modem (b-focus v-2fub/I type 1B), but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I ask for my PPPOE username and password on chat and was also given a VLAN ID of 329. I've tried these in the router without any join, I've also tried without the VLAN and using 101 that I've seen mentioned elsewhere.

Is it perhaps the router that's the problem? Is it just too old? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thank you very much.

Other that in the Hull area the VLAN ID for FTTC should be 101, but that is handled by the modem, not the router, and on the ECI modem it's already set for you!

The next thing is to make sure Vodafone have given you the correct username and password which should look something like:

example - not my real un/passexample - not my real un/pass

After entering your un/pass on your router with a PPPoE connection, that should be pretty much it.  The only problem with the ECI modem is that you can't directly see the line stats - unless you do a lot more work!

There are only two VLANs you need to know (AFAIK).. They are CityFibtre 911 or  Openreach 101.

So after confirming that the PPPoE details were correct I've come to the realisation that the issue is the modem. The 'DSL' light never comes on and the power light just flashes forever, the reset button doesn't seem to do anything.

Unless anybody has any suggestions on what to try with it, I guess I'll have to get another modem and try again. Thanks for the help.

Try another cable and possibly filter first, if you have them to hand, though any ECI modem is going to be old, so unreliability tends to creep in!

I just want to make sure you're putting your username in as dsl*******@broadband.vodafone.co.uk, but if you've been reading around I'm sure you are.

I use the Linksys MR8300 but with a Draytek Vigor 130 modem and three Velop nodes on FTTC/Superfast 2.   It has been up and running for about two and a half years with zero user intervention beyond curiosity and very occasionally restarting the one or the other of the two most distant nodes.

When I first decided to use mesh nodes to extend my wifi throughout the house and gardens, I simply bought three Velop nodes.  The first was wire connected to the Vodafone router in bridge mode.  The second two nods simply connected to the first to create the pseudo mesh network.   Your MR8300 is simply a Velop Node in a traditional wifi router - in bridge mode, your nodes should connect (although I never tried it out) in exactly the same as my Velop nodes 2 & 3 connected to the bridge moded Velop node 1.
I subsequently decided to go the whole hog by binning the Vodafone router in favour of the Draytek modem and MR8300 mesh router.

Getting the wrong (or more accurately, 'incomplete') PPPoE details is fairly common.  A good starting point for basic trouble shooting with your new set up.  My kit worked straight out of the box so I didn't have to worry about setting the VLAN ID to 101.

Thank you all for reassuring me I'm on the right track. I'll give it a go again this afternoon and report back. It might just need another chat with the live chat to double check the details.
