Ive ordered full fibre but with no phone line. However, INotice that the fibre install will have a phone line installed as part of the process and I can upgrade if I require. I asked to retain my phone number and my question is if I plug in my internet phone can someone phone me and I can answer. I know i cant make calls.

Your query is a little confusing.
All Vodafone plans come with a phone connection, but you don't have to use it.
Using an standard phone ( analog or DECT set) connected to the TEL ports on the router you can receive or make chargable calls.
If you have an "internet phone", I assume you means a VoIP phone, yes you can use it, but not with Vodafone's calls service. (with a few exceptions)
Apologies if I have misunderstood your query, perhaps you could rephrase it.

Sorry about the confusion. I have not paid for Vodafone's call service, hoping to rely on mobile from now on. But I was trying to ascertain if anyone phoned my old landline number, I did request that I kept this number at sign up just in case, would the phone line connection work and I be able to answer the call.

Yes, that is how it should work, but the phone will need to be connected via the TEL socket(s) on the router. Any phone that would work if plugged into a BT type socket will be fine.

Surely in order to have his landline number ported to Vodafone he would have had to pay for the phone service, ie Digital Voice?

No, the digital phone service is included with every Vodafone contract.
Outgoing call are chargeable, unless you take a call package.
