IF YOU ARE USING A THIRD-PARTY ROUTER THAT WORKS 100% WITHOUT BUGS.PLEASE PM ME THE MAKE AND MODEL SO I CAN UPDATE THE LIST

The first thing you need to do is ask Vodafone for your username and password. live chat with Vodafone is best because you can copy and paste the name and password into the router. ( some users did write it down wrong. password is lower and upper case. username watch out for zero and o )

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/contact-us/index.htm

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/

FTTC SETTING         ( FTTP is below FTTC)

The setting is the same for all the routers it's down to the isp (the setting page will be laid out differently but the setting are still the same, eg

Vodafone setting are

Vlan ID - 101

enable 802.1q (not on every router)

Username  - ******@broadband.vodafone.co.uk

Username - ******@businessbroadband.vodafone.co.uk  ( for business customers )

Password - ********

PPPoE

MTU Size : 1492

rest of the setting auto detect when the router and the dslam are negotiating with each other

Vodafone will tell you to set it to 101, if you do this it will not work! Keep the default MTU size (1480), do not change it to 1492, as suggested in several posts in this thread, or it will not work!.

Hi

so my fibre  is being installed now as I type. I’ve move home and virgin can’t supply a service and skys best is 55mb/s.

Anyway i had a ASUS AX5400 connected to my virgin hub in router mode. i have lots of computers, phones and smart home tech connecting to the WiFi  and the standard hubs was struggling.
I plan to use the ASUS router with a ASUS RT-AX92U on the mesh connection. My home wife now needs extend to an annex building.

looking at what’s being connecter to my wall I assuming I can box the Vodafone router and just plug my AX5400 in the the box being installed on the wall?

as above unlike the virgin system where the router is connected to the cable, set to modem mode and your 3ed party router router in to that.

Yes you can (best test with the Vodafone router to make sure it all works first). you will need your PPPoE credentials from Vodafone. Best way to get those is via live chat: https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/

Unfortunately you will lose the telephone service as that (at the moment) requires the Vodafone router.

I found the below setting for the router, looks like you can turn off the WiFi. To be fair getting around to actually looking at it there’s even a hard button for this on the hub!

I have left the Vodafone hub connected to the fibre outlet. Switch off its WiFi and connect my ASUS AX5400 form one if the Vodafone hubs Ethernet ports to the WiFi in on the ASUS hub.

Effectively the set up I had with virgin.  While it means the pain of two hubs being plugged in. I’ve not need any of the account passwords or details I’ve been told you need. If you ditch the Vodafone hub completely. I also still have access to my phone line off the Vodafone hub.

I’m getting 250 ish 300 of my 600mbps broadband. But I think that’s just the rubbish speed of the moment as it’s the same if I’m just using the Vodafone hub.
however I’ll keep an eye on that!

I assume you mean the WAN port on the Asus.

What you have done is connect one router behind the other. This means you are running with double NAT. Whist many people do so, it can cause problems.

Well having just Googled it -

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6277579?hl=en-GB#what-is-double-nat

it shouldn’t give me double Nat issue because I’ve disabled the WiFi on the Vodafone hub. So I’m only broadcasting  one WiFi signal off the ASUS hub.
Once I get an additional ASUS hub, i’ll use the air mesh system in them to provide Seamless WiFi coverage.

however I don’t know anything about “issue if you play online games or use IP address assignments, port forwarding rules and UPnP”

so any advice on that would be good.

also dose anyone know the speeds the lan ports on the Vodafone hub are capable of? And how to get the best speeds from them?

And can you get something that allows you to drop the Vodafone hub, but still keep the phone line?

should my current set up not work as well as I think.

Double NAT has nothing to do with Wi-Fi, it's to do with having two networks, one behind the other.

The only way to overcome problems caused by double NAT is to stop doing it.

If your Asus has an AP (Access Point) mode it would be better to use that, but it means the router becomes just a Wi-Fi adapter and doesn't use any of it's advanced features. What's the difference between access point (AP) mode and router mode? | Windows Central

The Ethernet ports on the THG3000 are Gigabit, and at the moment there is no known way of using the Vodafone VoIP solution without the Hub.

It’s 0854 and I just got 473mbps on a test.
so short of any double Nat issues that have been mentioned. This seems a good all round option.

I'm running a TP Link Archer AX11000...

Do I need to continue using my modem? I don't see how I can unless I turn the Vodafone Router/Modem into Modem only mode, as my modemwas an oldskool BT open reach one from off of the 2000's...?

I tried banging the patch cable from the new little black box on the wall (not sure of the correct technical term/name for it) into the WAN port, added the user/password deets I got from Vodafone but it wouldn't connect.

Now back on the Vodafone router until I can work out what to do.

Please help...!!!

This router needed a separate modem in the old set up...

As I understand from here if you connect a third-party router straight into the fibre box on the wall, you need some information from Vodafone to get it to work. If you have a land line with them You’ll also lose that because that comes out of their router.

I have my Vodafone router connected to the box on the wall where the fibre line comes into the house, with the Wi-Fi turned off.   And from there I have a third-party router connected, that’s broadcasting Wi-Fi.

I didn’t need any settings from Vodafone to set it up, just put it all together. It also means I can still have my landline connected and working.

I’m not sure if it’s the best solution, I’m not an IT technician. But it does seem to work without compromising my landline.

You mention a "new little black box" so I'll assume you are on FTTP.

Double check your PPPoE details, the font may make characters look like others. Copy/paste these into a notepad text document to be sure.

Login username needs to be in the format dslxxxxxxxx@broadband.vodafone.co.uk

If your upload/download speeds are very similar you need to set a VLAN ID of 911

If your upload is much less than download the VLAN ID should be disabled or left blank

There's no reason why your AX11000 should not work.
