Hi I have the newer large black router which is good day to day and have a WD MyCloud running on the network. I want to replace the WD MyCloud with a hard drive plugged in the router as only need local access to the files and more of a place to back up to.

the issue is I have been playing around and can get drives to be seen on the network but non of the files I have placed on these drives are able to be seen. It seem to just find the route of the drive. I have created new folders and then I can not see these off the router?

what am I doing wrong? I have tried USB sticks as exFat hard drives as exFat and even a SSD drive.

Could someone explained how to get this working please.

thanks

When you do get it working you may be a bit disappointed as the USB ports seem to be only USB 2 so speeds will never be very fast. Probably more suited to printer sharing than files.

The way I got it to work was to create a drive letter in Windows (I assume you are using Windows).

Go to Sharing in the router and you should see your drive under drives. click on it and copy the path shown.

Mine is \\vodafone.broadband\Teclast_CoolFlash_1_048d .

Paste that into File manager and you should see the contents of the drive.

For some reason a couple of my PC's couldn't see the drive using it (probably DNS related) and I had to replace the "vodafone.broadband" with the routers IP address.

If you are using backup software then that may be all you need to know, but if you want a drive letter in Windows for it then once you have it showing in file manager follow the network icon on the left until you see the drive and right click on it and choose "Map network drive..".

That's how I did it, possibly not the correct way, but it worked for me.

Edit. I'm pretty sure my stick is NTFS formatted.

Any chance it's a SMB 1.0 or CIFS issue?

I doubt it. I have them disabled and it works for me.

It still asks me for username and password.

there must be something wrong or we just need to find out what the username and password of the router is.
Any ideas?

I have about 5 PCs/laptops her and they can all access the USB share and none of them ask for a username and password. I can only imagine there is something about your network that is causing it.

Have you tried from more than one device in case is a misconfiguration on one device?

You could try admin (all lower case) and your routers password (not the WiFi one).

The first thing I would do is reset the router to factory settings (from the firmware, not with the button).

If that doesn't fix it, it's got me stumped.

What is the path for your stick according to the router?

I ahve the same problem, and on the router there is no option to setup the username and password.

What to do?

@JoseAlmeida You're asking in a 2 year old discussion during which time there have been some changes to the Vodafone router.

Which router are you using?

Have you tried the details on the sticker?

Can you connect with a mobile device using the WPS button, then connect to the router admin screen where you can change the password to one you know.

I have just replaced my Iomega USB HD with an Integral USB HD. The Iomega drive, once plugged into my Hub 3, could be accessed remotely, and mapped as a network drive. The Integral drive does not, it is showing on my router page as having the address of \\vodafone.broadband\SMI_USBDISK_1_7d65 but I cannot access that location, when I try to I get an error (both via file explorer or a web browser), and even if I replace the start with its local IP 192.168.1.1 I still get an error in file explorer, but in the web browser I am getting a 404 Not Found page.

Any ideas please?

Weirdly, I can access the contents of the USB drive when I go to This PC\Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub\Music\All Music, but I'd like to be able to map the drive and I'd like to be able to access the files remotely.

Update: Having now plugged my Iomega USB HD back in, I'm having the same problem with it. Have Vodafone done something to the router to stop USB sharing?

@ryanadamsfan  IF the VF router is still sharing in Samba v1 it could be the reason. Either see if the router has an option for the Samba version or change the settings in the computer (but Samba v1 is a security risk).

I don't use the VF router, so it may be sharing in a newer protocol that I am not aware of.

I don't have SMB1 enabled, and the sharing works for me, so no, I don't think the router needs it.
