Router password changing without any clue whatsoever

I've got a bit of a thinker here.

I (tried) logging into my Vodafone router today to see if I could use beamforming (spoiler, I can't) and I was unable to logoin using the password i had set the routers control panel to use. Bewildered, I had then tried to use the standard password on the bottom of the router, but no dice. Then, after running every password I could think of, I caved and reset my router to factory settings. All seeming well and good, I then started the process of setting everything as it was pre reset. (i.e. changing SSID and password, renaming known devices, reconnecting the router app, etc.) After awhile, I noticed there were 3 users logged in. 2, I would have expected, because I was logged into the control panel using my phone and my laptop, but 3 was unknown to me. I went to change the control panel password and I was succsesful, and went about my merry way. After a few minutes, my session timed out and I had to log in. Using either password i had just created went nowhere, as did the standard password.

Does anyone have any insight? Is it time to burn my brand new router?

What does the log say?

It's quite possible one of your devices is showing twice due to having both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. So my suggestion is to disconnect or otherwise disable all the connectable devices and disable all the IPv6 settings, make your changes, then run it for a while to see if the problem reoccurs.

I can't check the log, in order to log in to view it, I'll have to factory reset the router, therefore deleting the log.

I believe the connections that we see (even though they show the IP address) are based on layer 2 (Data Link) rather than layer 3 (Network Layer).  So I wouldn't expect to see two connections based on the different IP addresses from the same device.

Thoughts on the password change?

@Bingo_Bongo  By any chance were the different attempts to logon done once from a browser and then from the App? The App and browser interfaces have different password minimum rules.
