TP Link TD-W9970 with newly installed FTTP Openreach ONT box

Hi..

I've just renewed my VF broadband contract and as part of that, I've had a new Fibre ONT connection point fitted.

My previous contract ran on the old BT type phone sockets and I connected my own TP Link TD-W9970 directly to the network via the VDSL socket on the back of the modem using my own PPOE credentials given to me by VF . I now wish to do the same with the fibre ONT connection point.

How do I now do this? The engineer said to just plug the TP linkdirectly  into the ONT via it's WAN port, but I get nothing. I've looked around a bit, and the closest I've found is from a BT forum with a similar question and the 'solved' answer was to:

"Just connect the TP Link wan port to the ONT and configure the PPPoE settings to the generic username of bthomehub@btbroadband.com and password BT.

Just connect the TP Link wan port to the ONT and configure the PPPoE settings to the generic username of bthomehub@btbroadband.com and password BT."

Is this right, and what would these 'generic' credentials be? I've read elsewhere (frem the same poster)  "You will need to reconfigure the Tp Link as a pure router rather than modem/router as the connection will be from the FTTP ONT to the WAN port of the Tp Link."...

So, do I need to also change ant of the TP Link modem settings "operation modes" as well? At ther moment it's just on "DSL Modem Router Mode".

Many thanks if anyone can help, I rather hoped this would have been a little easier..

Bt home hub? Really?

With a vf upgrade from FTTC your old PPPoE details should work fine for at least the first few days, but they will change these so be ready to contact vf for your new details.

As with every new service you're advised that activation can occur any time up to midnight.

*edit*

Just realised one thing. Igf the fibre is with Cityfibre the vlanid needs to be 911, or disabled (blank) for openreach.

I don't know the TP-Link routers, but that will definitely be wrong, as you don't want to use the modem.

It may say something like "router only".

But be aware your current PPPoE details may not work for long, others on here have found that when going to FTTP, they have had to get new credentials.

The TP Link TD-W9970 is a really outdated 802.11n class modem/router with only 100Mbps ethernet ports!  Going into its Web interface you can change one of the LAN ports so that it acts as a WAN port.  So you could use it with new FTTP service, but if you'd picked anything more than a 100Mbps service it'll top you out at that limit.  With the WAN port set up, you should be able to enter your specific username, password, and if you are on CityFibre VLAN:911 all on the Intenet connection page or via the wizard.

If the only reason you want to use this router is that it has your network set up on it, then it might be better to use the Vodafone router and change the SSID and WiFi password on that instead, or at least until you can upgrade it!

Thanks for all the responses, I'll try a few things. Slightly annoyed as I was told before the installation that all the credentials would remain the same etc.

I was thinking of upgrading to a better modem soon anyway, but as I'm only on a 75mbps contract, it seemed premature. What 3rd party modem model is the most popular with people on VF with FTTP? (Something up to mid range price wise..). It would be useful to know as then there should be a decent amount of available info on settings out there.

Many thanks again.

To be honest I'm a little reluctant to recommend a router, as everybodys mileage is different.  If you stick with TP-Link then go for a main-line model, as those tend to get much longer support!  Beyond that, it's down to how much you have to spend and what features you need.
