Vodafone Full Fibre (CityFibre) Router

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this...

We are looking to swap from Virgin to Vodafone Full Fibre.  For a couple of reasons...

1. Faster upload speeds.  Virgin upload speed seems to be about 10% of download, whist Vodafone seems to be nearer 50% of the speed (we are looking at the 900/900 but I wouldn't expect 900 up, 450 up would be unbelievable).

2. Better ping.  I hoping for a sub 5ms latency.  For gaming.

3. A decent router.  The Virgin router is SOOO locked down.  You cant set anything on it apart for the restricted list of options they allow.  I am struggling to find out if the Vodafone full fibre router is just a router with all the expected options or if its a cut down one like Virgin?  If it is a restricted menu, I could pop a new ADSL modem/router in place I beleive? (I think I could with Virgin but as its DSL I still need their box as the router I think - its not as simple)

If anyone has any experience of these or any of these points I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Dave.

You should actually get the full 900Mbs up and down. Vodafone quote the guaranteed speed as half that, presumably as a "get out" if there are problems it doesn't want to bother solving.

The Vodafone router is very locked down, you will definitely want to look at using your own. FTTP isn't VDSL, so you don't want an ADSL/VDSL modem-router, just a router. (your own router will help in ensuring you get maximum speeds, if other posts on the forum are to be believed.)

If you use your own router, you will lose the phone service.

With Virgin you could use your own router as their box has a "modem only" mode, the Vodafone router doesn't so you have to replace it completely.

Edit: I wouldn't get your hopes up on a better ping, that seems to be a bit of a problem at the moment.

Ping/Latency way higher Gigafast 900 - Community home (vodafone.co.uk)

Thank you for the info

What sort of ping is generally accepted as normal on Voda (I know that's a question like How long is a a peice of string)

I'm not on FTTP, (I'm on FTTC) so I can't answer that. I'm sure you will get some replies from those who are.

But I suspect it will differ widely.
