Solution

Vodafone doesn't work with PS4

Hi everyone,

I joined Vodafone at the end of Feb and during a few weeks all was fine. However recently I started experiencing a connection drop from my PS4 whenever I play online games. It doesn't happen consistently, but it will just lose the internet connection randomly and I will get kicked out of the game. If I then go to PS -> Settings -> Network -> Test Connection is starts working properly again.

I've read loads of articles online and tried a few potential solutions myself:

  1. Use an ethernet cable instead of WiFi -> doesn't fix the issue
  2. Set up port forwarding for the PS4 -> doesn't fix the issue
  3. Reset the router -> doesn't fix the issue

However none of these work. Internet is fine otherwise on laptops, TV, speakers, etc. It's just the PS4 that has this issue. However, I also tried tethering my mobile internet to the PS4 and the issue does not happen, so there is something definitely wrong with the Vodafone broadband or router.

Unfortunately, this only started happening recently and the 30 day period to cancel the contract has expired. I do however think this is a good enough reason to cancel the contract with no exit fees but unfortunately would have to go through CISAS which can be a lengthy process. I would much rather get this solved in a different way. Otherwise, I'm happy with Vodafone.

Have other people experienced a similar issue? Did you manage to fix it?

Thanks!

The really important question is:  Are you on Superfast 1, 2, Gigafast, or gigacube?  If it's the last of these then your router just doesn't use NAT (Network Address Translation) that is compatible with PS4 online gaming!  Unless the techs know different, it doesn't look as if that is going to change any time in the near future.

If you are not using a Gigacube then I'd start by doing some throughput tests using sites such as www.speedtest.net

I'm on Superfast 2, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've ran several speed tests and that doesn't seem to be the issue either. The problem is only happening on PS4 when playing online, so I'm thinking some router config specific to PS4 might be the problem.

Hey @liarspoker. Sorry to hear you're having some issues connecting your PlayStation to the router, this shouldn't be the case. Have you modified any settings in the router gateway? Also if you're running any VPN's we would advise to remove these also, as this can stop you from connecting certain devices. Another way which may help is changing your routers DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 which is a public domain and is free to use.

Hi. Sorry to hijack this thread but you have described what is happening to me to the exact T. Been with Vodafone Superfast 1 for a little over a month and nothing but issues with connectivity with the PS4. I’m constantly  running speed tests with various other devices with no issues and no apparent drops in connection. The PS4 can’t seem to cope. Very erratic drops in connection which causes complete disconnect from online games (very frustrating when you’re deep in a game of Warzone!). And as you described, a quick ‘test connection’ on the PS4 dashboard and it’s back up like nothing ever happened. I’ve tried boosting to the PS4 via vodefone app but the speeds don’t seem to be the issue.

Played with a lot of connection settings on the PS4 itself with no avail. I’ll keep trying things and with respond again here if anything works. But realistically, I’ll probably cut my losses and switch to a better provider.

No problem! I managed to fix this after buying a new router. I bought this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N2LSLMH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would suggest you try the following before buying a new router though:

  1. On the PS4, go to set up connection
  2. Move the cursor to your WiFi network and press options
  3. Select 2.4GHz only (this will prevent the router from moving the PS4 across bands)
  4. Finish setting up WiFi with no other custom options

If this doesn't work, then buying a new router may be cheaper than cancelling the Vodafone contract. I would suggest you file a formal complain though so they're aware of the issue (there's a link to file complains on the Vodafone site). Don't go through the normal contact number though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I had played with selecting bands too with no luck in getting consistent speed without lag or drop outs. Wired connection has seemed to solve this for me, so I can only assume the Vodafone modem just isn't up for giving a good wi-fi signal to the PS4. I was very close to buying a third party modem myself, so I'm glad that this has worked for you!

Any chance you could clarify the make and model number as that Amazon link goes to a multi buy option and the first one is not available. Also any info on set up for a complete idiot? As I really don’t know too much about this. Other than psn can’t be connected to and my kid is giving me grief. All works fine tethered off my phone but not through WiFi or Ethernet using the vodaphone gigafast. Hoping the router change will fix it?

@Dant

As this thread is over 2 years old, and I'm sure plenty of people are using PlayStations on Vodafone in the meantime, you might be better off starting your own, describing in more detail the problem you are having.

I suspect it may be due to the parental settings on Vodafone, so try changing the DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 as that will bypass them.
