Xbox hell, second router question?

Hi, wonder if anyone can help.

Recently switched over from sky to Vodafone and am starting to regret it (except for the speed)

I've read multiple threads about problems with Xbox's on the Vodafone router and I'm getting problems similar to most) (Namely https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Broadband-connection/Xbox-Series-X-wired-connection-issue/m-p/270519... )

Turning an Xbox on I don't always get a connection, or it thinks it's connected but won't actually download anything / play games. If I restart the router with the Xbox already on and connected via ethernet it works. (I can't keep doing this every time I want to play games!)

Setup is Vodafone THG3000 wired ethernet to TP-Link power line, then recieving powerline wired to a 5 port network switch, wired to a TV and at least 2 Xbox's. (Series X and One X permanently)

I also repair Xbox's, so when testing, I just hook up to another ethernet port in the switch. But these won't connect either unless I restart the router (alway connected without a hitch with the same setup connected to sky SR203)

Never had an issue with sky, so it's definitely a voda router issue. Seem like it gets confused with Xbox's

We need to keep the phone line VoIP so can't replace the router. 🥺

What options do I have? If I bought an aftermarket router can I connect that to the Vodafone router via ethernet (THG300 LAN into the WAN socket on aftermarket?) and let the aftermarket one deal with all the connected devices on the powerline rather than the Vodafone one?  (So the IP is generated by the aftermarket router?) Or am I talking nonsense?

(Sorry networking confuses me 😆 I like plug and play stuff)

Thanks, Ross.

Hi @MrBridger! I had a similar issue with my personal connection. I'm a Vodafone Home Broadband customer and also use two Xbox Ones on the same network. I found that having one using a wired connection and the other on a wireless connection bypassed the problem altogether. If you'd prefer to have these both on a wired connection, I'd recommend trying the troubleshooting steps here to see if these help 🙂

Thanks for the reply Beth, it's definitely a router issue tho.

Even when the Xbox says it's connected, and NAT shows open, it just refuses to download anything, or play games. It fails to do detailed network test, even tho it returns a connected to the internet message.

I cannot use WiFi reliably, it's on the opposite corner of the house, hence the powerline. I have tried to connect one with WiFi, but I get similar issues. It connects, but after the Xbox has been switched off for a day or so, won't reconnect unless I power cycle the router.

Every time there's an issue, I cycle the router and it works again. But only if the Xbox's are connected/ on while the router is cycled. It super annoying. If I then try to connect another Xbox for testing/ updating, that one won't connect, and I have to cycle the router again. Frustrating isn't the word.

I don't mind buying another device if it's going to fix my issue.

If you also have any Sky Q Mini's - turn them off and see if the problem persists!

for testing

Vodafone THG3000 wired ethernet to your 5 port switch  ( miss the powerline out ) use a long cat cable for a few days which if you mend Xbox's bet you have got loads around, got a feeling it will be the power line .

ps I have a switch running into a switch and then into another switch, got 3 Xbox's connected with no issues at all

As the Xbox is going via a switch, I'm surprised you're having the problem.

Everyone on the other thread that has used a switch has cured it.

Perhaps try a switch between the the router and the powerline adaptor.
