Solution

Network Unlock code from previous contract

Heeere we go again. Asking for help/guidance from the good people on this forum.

I have recently changed to SIM only after completing my 2 year contract with Vodafone. My previous contract started in May 2018, completed in May 2020 and was with an iphone handset. Now that the contract is over, I would like my handset unlocked.

I have submitted the request using https://www.vodafone.co.uk/vodafone-uk/forms/unlock-code-request/. As in the guidance, I received email to confirm my email address which I did.

The next step I got was another email from Vodafone saying I need to be on the plan for more than 3 months before I can request the NUC. What the ....?!?! Atleast the system should detect I do not have a handset with my current contract... is it a stretch to expect the system or whoever dealt with the request to determine the NUC relates to my previous contract?

I am not really looking forward to another 15 days of my life stressing about calling 191 or going to their social media support, then wait for their call backs/emails which never come, then chase again, then wait again! but I suppose there is no other way

arghh... Frustrated...

I believe the issue is Vodafone's systems reset when you upgraded hence the need for  x3 bill's to be paid on time and 30 days usage.

A faster way would be to pick up a Vodafone Payg sim card and then make calls etc and then after 30 days use the new Vodafone Payg account details to request the unlock.

Just an idea or pursue through the Vodafone Social Media Teams via Contact-us-for-account-specific-queries  @kaustubha

thanks @BandOfBrothers.

I hear there are ebay vendors who can provide unlock codes. That will probably cost as much as prepaid card and will be much more faster.

I know most people in my situation would probably go through the same emotions - why should I spend all this money and time to get something that I should get without all the hassle? Why do we bend over backwards to accomodate a rubbish service? I suppose the answer is nobody is forcing me to and I am free to leave... I am not though. The Network Unlock Code should be provided after the service has been used for X duration - I have used it for whole of my contract and I should get the NUC now.

My rant apart, I called up 191, went through my issue. The person who responded said - surprise surprise - this request needs to go to a 'specialist team' for NUC. He is sending the issue to them and they will get back to me in 48-72 hours. Confirmed my phone number, my email address, got an alternative phone number.

after hanging up the phone, what do I get - an automated email from Vodafone asking me to confirm my email address, just like the one I got when I submitted the NUC form. I confirmed my email address, 2 hours later, I got an email just like yesterday telling me I need to use the service for atleast 3 months before requesting the NUC.

so again, either the system has let my advisor down, or the specialist team is so special that they did not really understand what the customer is going through here. hmmpphh

You're very welcome @kaustubha

Yes there are online unlocking sites but be careful to check they are reputable before parting with any funds and look to see how one would recieve support or a refund if things go wrong.

Vodafone Uk Payg Sim Cards can be applied for online via Here and chosen with or without credit applied and are free or they can be picked up from a supermarket / newsagent or Highstreet discount £1 store and then one could choose Vodafone Payg1 and top up with a minimum amount and use that to make calls.

I'm pretty confident that an online unlocking site would cost more.

Of course it's up to you.

It's my opinion that Vodafone do not supply the Nuc as some people go onto using a sim only contract thus keep using the phone and some use Payg.

Not everyone wants to unlock their phone but I do take your point.

As I touched on earlier because you upgraded this is seen as a new contract IMO thus Vodafone's Systems would need to see 30 days usage and x3 bill's paid on time.

I wish you all the best with this situation.

@kaustubha If you're using the same SIM following your change to SIM Only, this wouldn't affect your eligibility to request for an NUC (Network Unlock Code). As we'll need to do some digging and access your account securely, please do drop us a message on either Twitter or Facebook and we'll be able to help with getting your phone unlocked.

If you include your Community username and a link to your post, you then won't need to write your query out again 😊

Thank you @Natasha and @BandofBrothers for replies.

We seem to have resolved this - I am not sure which step I took resulted into this. Got an email from someone from Vodafone saying they had unlocked the phone. I thought the unlocking needed putting in a code in the phone however it seems this was done remotely. I have tried putting in a different sim in the phone and it did not ask for a code as it did earlier, so the phone seems to have got unlocked.
