4G Smart watch SIM

Hello.

What sim card do i need for my new 4G smartwatch?

It's a Huawei Watch 2, 4G. I assume I need a data only plan. It can take nano or eSIM. I'm assuming it only needs data and then it simply connects to the main (Vodafone Samsung S8)  phone to perform any Comms/SMS/calls..

Can anyone advise?

Cheers

Vodafone do not supply esim cards so a nano is your option.

Are you on a contract or Payg.

It would also need to support Vodafone UK.choice of band's and frequencies. IMG_20180107_064807.jpg

To add I use a Samsung Gear s3 Frontier Watch and it connects to my Samsung Galaxy s8 phone where when it's paired I can make and send texts , emails and make calls etc.

But it's not standalone.

Can your watch do this or do you need it standalone.

I have the same question, and in fact I have ordered the same watch.  I'm not clear how the watch can be used independently and in tandem with the phone - how do calls to my phone number get routed to the watch when the two devices are not near each other?  As I understand it you cannot have two SIM cards active for the same telephone number.

@andrewjamesgrif I can't see that we currently offer this device, so we'd be unable to provide support on it. I'd advise you to contact the manufacturer directly to see if they're able to help 🙂

Hi Alex,

I'll check it out when I get the watch officially at Christmas, as I havent been able to look at it yet.

Generically what is the process for support 4G enabled smart watches, in terms of how they interact/connect with a mobile phone?  Do they normally have separate sim cards and separate phone numbers, or do you normally issue a data-only sim for the watch?

Thanks,

Andrew.

Watches and other wearables normally pair with a phone and simply act as an extension of it.   It's worth checking the spec carefully as functionality can vary and some devices work best if both parts of the pair are the same brand.

Standalone watches have their own SIM, but I'm not sure Vodafone offer any of them.   You'd need to check the manufacturer website and maybe play around with a PAYG or 30-day contract SIM before committing fully.   I'd also want to know whether the watch can be used as a partner to the main phone when possible.   If there's a calling/texting capability, it would need its own number and that might be inconvenient, especially if it used it all the time.

I have just gone through the process of signing up for One Number for my Huawei Watch 2. Unfortunately I didn't realise mine didn't have an eSIM so I went onto online chat and a new nano SIM was sent out. It arrived, I put it in my watch then tried to activate it. It asked for an EID so I went back on to online chat only to be told they don't support the Huawei watch. Now, having gone through the online help for one number, I was taken to a page that gave me instructions on activating a Huawei watch!  I've made a complaint and they've called me up "to get it sorted", they've spoken to tech support and come back and said they don't support the Huawei watch, keep an eye on the website for future updates.

I am livid! I can't see any reason why they can't activate the sim and link it to my account via one number and no one has been able to give me an answer apart from "we don't support Huawei watches". Am I being unreasonable?  I'm asking them to provide a service that they are capable of providing while charging me more for the privilege! I just don't get it!

Are you within the 30 day cooling-off period?   If so, you can cancel the account and that'll be an end of it.   If you're outside that period, I'd recommend engaging with the Social Media team on Facebook or Twitter.   They'll be able to take your details privately and investigate.
No network will guarantee to support a device they don't supply, I'm afraid, so it's just a matter of working out how to cancel what you've signed up for.

My mobile contract isn't the issue. I don't expect vodafone to support the watch, I'm not asking them to. All I would like them to do is activate the nano sim and link that to my phone number so that I can use 4g on my watch.  I can't see any reason why they can't do that.
