Setting up 4g calling ready for next year.

Hi

i have received a text saying 3g calling will end next year. I entered my IEMI number into the check box & it says that my Sony Xperia X Compact is compatible with 4g calling so i contacted a Vodafone worker via Facebook messenger & he sent me a few texts & to text CALLING to 97888. I did this & it said WiFi calling is added but nothing about 4g calling..

How can i make sure that my phone has 4g calling ? or is the WiFi calling & 4g calling the same?

Regards

yeh it's interesting stuff & always good to be prepared.. I'm not concerned about the far future with it all it was just if my phones will work ok when 3g finishes..

Regards

Just a quick question that i'll post here instead of a new thread..

The Vodafone network checker says that 2g, 3g & 4g are working in my area but no 5g which i thought was strange considering 5g phones are for sale i think & i'm in a big city..  Can anyone confirm this for me & that 2g is working in Sheffield?

Many thanks

The Coverage Map shows good 2/3 & 4G coverage across the city, but says there's no 5G.   However, it does look as though there may be some peripheral signal, particulartly in the corridor towards Rotherham.   I don't know why this would be and whether it's accurate - it's very patchy.   5G rollout does seems to have stalled a bit and I certainly wouldn't be paying a premium for a compatible device just at the moment - although most recent introductions seem to include it. so that's rapidly becoming less of an issue.   Unless you need a super-fast mobile connection, 4G and 4G+ will probably meet all your requirements.

@hrym thanks, as is the original topic of the thread i'm going to be reliant on 2g next year for my calls & texts & i see that is well supported.  My Sony is adequate for me & works well so i'll be keeping that but older phones don't last forever.. but i need for specific app that ain't available on many phones nowadays.

I forgot to ask

is there a specific date & time that 3g will be shut off?

Also

Will my phone show 2g when a call is being made or gsm as opposed to 'H+' that i see now which i assume is 3g..

Thanks

I think it may not cos they bombarding me with texts saying I need to upgrade, maybe because it's not good for business if stick with an older phone.

I've never looked at the symbol while I'm on a call, so don't know.  It's possible it'll still display 4G if it can get that, but use the underlying 2G for the voice bit.   I'm not aware of a shut-off date.

I was getting the "upgrade" texts, but they seem to have stopped now.   I did suggest that they were misleading.

@hrym the phone has always shown H+ when calling of just H.

Is 2g OK for texts and MMS?

Yes. Both calls and SMS/MMS use the 2G network.

getting loads of messages about my phone using 3g for calls & i need to upgrade but nothing saying they don't need to, not giving the people the option to stay with their old phone.. false advertising in ways
