If that doesn't help, the it would also be worth checking the contacts (and possibly cleaning them) on the cover - I assume that's how it knows it's properly on. The other possibility is a swollen battery that's pushing the cover off. Check for that too. There were some faulty batteries a while back and, although I haven't heard of the issue affecting the S5, it would be worth a check.

Hi,
I only get that alert when rebooting or powering the phone on & off.
I've just tested & this happens whether i've had the back cover off or i've left it in place.
So it appears the alert is on restart just to remind you to check the cover as it assumes due to the power off you've potentially just removed the back cover.
I've just tried using the phone with the back cover off and there is no alert at all.
If the alert is random it would suggest a fault with the phone.

I think that's about the size of it. It looks as though there's a failure of the mechanism that senses that the cover is in place and you've pretty much eliminated any software issues.
I might be inclined to go direct to Samsung on this. As a 3rd party repairer, Vodafone are basically just going to do a visual check and a factory reset. If the fault doesn't recur when they turn it on, they'll assume it's fixed. As the manufacturer, Samsung may have come across the problem before and have a better idea what to look for.

I have the same problem. Randomly about 3-4 times a day I get the 'check the cover' message. Note: I am also using the Wireless charging case (official Samsung one) - I wonder if it is a problem with those cases ??
Out of interest, do you also find that you intermittently get the orange flashing light on your Samsung wireless charging unit - like you wake up and see the flashing orange light instead of the solid green one, and then find that it's only charged part way ?
If you also get that problem, try going back to using the standard back panel for a few days and see if the error messages go away... I'll try the same when I get home next weekend.
I just have a sneaky feeling this is the wireless charging rear panel, and not actually the phone.
Will update on what I find when I change back to a standard rear panel.
