Cnmbook(7"linux) And Vodafone K3565

gdf
Not applicable
I have just brought a CnMBook ( 7"Linux) and am unable to get it to work with my Vodafone Top up and go mobile broardband K3565.

I have entered all the settings as required by the CnM website.

I emailed them stating that the K3565 was working fine with my laptop and their reply was

"The minibook is a low powered device. So the signal for 3g will be half that of your laptop.Try this in a different area or location within youre home. You will find that it will connect at a higher level.
I have tried at various locations round the town but still no success. According to the vodafone site we have good strong coverage here.

Does the CnM reply sound reasonable or does anyone have any other ideas.

I personnally feel thet the settings might be wrong but they are exactly as per CnM website.

Thanks for any help.

George

Good Evening george d,

A very warm welcome to the eForum! You have come to the right place for help!

I'm afraid you haven't been given the correct information, there isn't such a thing as half a connection! I'm sure we can get to the bottom of it though!

First of all, when you plug the modem into your minibook can you hear the audio alert to say it has recognised new hardware? You can also check this by going to 'My Computer' and checking if there is a drive for VMC.EXE. If there is, double click and this should launch the dashboard for you.

If there is no drive can you please follow the directions below.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Phone/Modem, Modem tab and delete any modems showing. After doing this please reboot the minibook twice.

Once restarted you will need to download the VMC software, you can do this by clicking here. (On the right handside you will see VMC 9.3.6, this is what you need to select.)

I'm sure you will be up and running in no time, please let me know how you get on! You can find loads of excellent troubleshooting guides in our Help Centre as well so take a look! :D

Hi

maybe half a connection doesn't make sense but suggesting running vmc.exe from linux is equally daft

There is a linux version of vmc but doubt it's any less hassle than getting correct info to put into
the minibook which might be a better method.

I'd be more interested in what settings are asked for on the minibook and if the modem is recognised
at all (may be difficult if not familiar with linux and tools available on that particular implementation).
I've no experience of minibook but know there are vastly different linux distributions and it's not easy
to generalise.

I'm not sure if access point should be different for top-up-and-go

For contract it is "internet" and prepay it is "pp.internet" and I suspect you need the latter.

If you can get a commandline up you may also be able to check some settings of modem and
signal quality but it requires that at least a simple comms program is installed, eg. cu or minicom.

Thanks.
Tried using "pp.internet" but same as before "Time Out, Link Down"

Sorry I won't be able to help very much as not familiar with either cnmbook or top-up-and-go.

pppd is usually the program that makes the connection

Is there any place you can enable pppd logging or capture (you don't want capture left on
during normal use as you'd get a gigantic logfile and slow connection).

At least it would appear your modem is recognised and a connection attempt being made.

If you want to delve through the internals it will not be easy unless you are familiar with
*nix or at least pppd that I'd used previously from dos.

There is usually some logging going to /var/log/messages but during setup here on NetBSD
I could just see pppd starting then timing out. At least it will give you the device name in
a line something like below for a successful connection. I can see from below connection is
from NetBSD since device name is different to that on Ubuntu-9.04 which is /dev/ttyUSB0.

Jul 23 06:38:13 eeepc900 pppd: Using interface ppp0
Jul 23 06:38:13 eeepc900 pppd: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyU0
Jul 23 06:38:18 eeepc900 pppd: CHAP authentication succeeded
Jul 23 06:38:18 eeepc900 pppd: CHAP authentication succeeded
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: Could not determine remote IP address: defaulting to 10.64.64.64
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: local IP address 10.46.213.77
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: remote IP address 10.64.64.64
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: primary DNS address 10.206.65.68
Jul 23 06:38:21 eeepc900 pppd: secondary DNS address 10.206.65.68

Hi George,

Unfortunately we only support the Top-up-and-Go Modem on Windows Installations - however, there is a thriving Linux development community over at BetaVine (our R&D department) who will be in a much better position to assist you further with this.

All your settings appear to be correct with regards to the APN settings, so I'm all out of ideas from our side, sorry :(
